Good dog over good bitch. Job done.

Feck the lines, breeders, reputatations.

You've got to know a good animal though. Plenty don't. :cray:

Cheers, D.

I be very interested to find out did you read this advise, are you giving out this advise, have you done any of this advise in your post that I quote,. if you have done it and its your own advise can you post up pictures of the success you have had with good dog over good bitch job done please.

I'm going on my experiences of seeing terriers work for over 40 years.

In the 70's when I started the show craze wasn't a craze, it was just a day out in Summer with like minded people, a chance to meet folks an arrange days out. There were some rosette hunters and puppy peddlers but nothing like as many as there are now, especially since the interweb came along.

The vast majority of good dogs that I've seen work didn't have big names behind them, they were bred worker to worker by lads who were out digging regulary and the pups changed hands for no or very little money. The way it should be.

Cheers, D.

PS I've bred 2 litters in 35 years and gifted the pups I didn't want.

The best workers ain't always the best producers

Nothing in the breeding of working terriers should ever be "theoretical". It should always be down to hard work. This theory that the right genes are in place is one of the reasons that there's so mu

Some say they would not breed of a non worker, myself included, but just say you have a dog or bitch with well proven blood lines and when they are about 5-6 year old and have done everything you have asked off them you then want to have a litter of them to keep the line going. Then say the bitch has we will say 6 pups all doing well and the diging season kicks in again. Now you take your proven dog and bitch out when season starts and BANG one of them don't want to know, let it be the dog or the bitch 1 has thrown in the towel, you try it again and same result not interested, but you still have 6 pups from this mating spread out between you and your mates,do you bring them on to adults or cull, would you call the 1 that jibbed a quitter,or say she or he had done enough over the previous 6 year to make up for it quitting.I think myself and this is my opinion that any terrier that is worked and worked hard are only as good as there last dig.

fat man, you could never of said some thing that I disagree with so much ! I will explain it in away that some new lads to the sport will understand, as those in the game for many a year will understand what I am saying.. most people think " ALI" was the greatest fighter of all time, but for those that have only seen his last few fights would disagree. dogs and humans peak at a certain age, you cant improve up to your last year of your life, as you age. a lot of what you have done in the past will catch up with you, as it is with dogs and humans. over the years I have seen a few dogs in the later years of there lives walk out after an hour or more on that last dig ( these dogs with there owners and friends were dug to at least 250 plus digs, one I know was dug to at least 300 plus digs, ( the dog was over 10 years old) a handy few of these digs the game shifted a few times and in the end the dog gave 100% on each dig, then one day walked out, are these dogs classed only as good as there last DIG ! I am afraid there not, there flesh and blood, and not machines, the longer your in the game you get to learn more about when its time to retire your dog / or bitch and breed off them.

Dealer, any terrier can quit at any given time, regardless of what way it works through its life and I am far from new to the sport,at it as long as yourself. My question was would you consider a terrier that walks out after 5-6 seasons good graft a quitter or has it done enough in its 5-6 seasons to allow for it walking and secondly if you had pups on the ground from this said dog or bitch would you rear them on to adulthood or cull.We had a black dog a few year back that worked like a gem until the start of its 4th season and for no reason just threw in the towel, not a hard dog,bayer-mixer type, its last dig was almost 10ft and he worked a treat but come the start of the next season did not want to know.

your digging over 40 years plus you are going to see a little bit more than a guy that's in the sport half the time, and you were correct in retiring your dogs at 8 @ 9 cause you know your dogs best ozzy.

I agree here dealer. I've been at this game only 11 years now, and I expect that there's a lot I am yet to see. The season starts for me here next week, and I will see if the dog I have can continue on his journey to be retired at 8 or 9 like his mother and grandfather. He's a stronger/bigger dog, so maybe he'll make 10? Cheers pal.

fatman, in all my years with dogs I can honestly say I never spoke bad about anyone's dog, or gave advise on what should be culled, but I can say I had a bitch that was bred to the hilt, looked like she was worth breeding as I now have 30 kennels and plenty of room, so I bred her kept the pups for myself it was her first litter, few lads wanted to buy her, she quit one day on me, I shot her and shot the pups off her, did I do the correct thing ? I don't know but I feel a whole lot better to day that there gone, some times you have to go with your gut feeling an old-time dog man told me that one day, that saying came back to haunt me a few times when I did not go with my gut feeling, but not no more , I walk down to my kennels now and look at every thing I have all from dogs and bitches with good blood, and none of there sire / dam quit, I feel happy with what I am feeding now.

@brog. As long as you gift a pup to a good working home that looks after it also give it a fair crack , and give the breeder first offers back wether its shite or good then there's not a lot more you can ask for when breeding pups !!

i breed what i think will work and from dogs that i think will throw workers and if someone is gifted a pup they are told no lies

if the pup makes the grade happy days if it doesnt its end of its days

as you no i bred a young bitch to a young dog the bitch died not long after the pups were born the young dog is still going strong and out of 4 pups 3 are working one a bit slower than the other two but working did i make the right choice breeding from a young pair of dogs so i would breed from a bitch if she as had 5 years digging or 1 dig if i think it will work i will do it if i needed

you have to have the power to stick with your convictions-brog i take my hat off to you  as long as there are people doing what you do-the working terrier will never die out, regardless of anymore unfair laws/acts-love him or hate him-mr nuttall has produced some fine working dogs over the years, and helped a lot of lads start/maintain a good working line-30 yrs + for some lads-just a shame that the times we live in are so negative/disrespectful-seems like the minute you have made it,theres always others who want to put you down-dont hate the player-hate the game- ;) and in the words of b.marley-"you cant please all the people! all of the time! :D remember you may not agree with his methods?but he has forgotten more than most-respect your elders :whistling: atb bobby nuttalls great blackheart
