Born Hunter 17,763
WILF, I can't dissagree with that. It's spot on. I'm a firm atheist so the "there something more than us kicking about" bit I obviously don't believe but the rest is very sensible to my mind. I'd hope I would not poke fun in another mans faith unprovoked.

Ratreeper 441
Righty ho........here gos, Its easy to snear at people with a belief, take points from the bible literally and poke fun at those that live literally according to the good book........ I view the bible as a series of metaphors which map out a decent way to live your life........now theres no reason not to think that there may have been a man 2000 years ago, wise and farseeing beyond his time, that thought up a series of rules to live your life by in order that it would give people a better way to live.........rather than just cutting about slaughtering each other Lets say he called this Christianity, now if you take "God" as a metaphor for Christianity then things becaome more easy to understand Let there be light could simply mean once you start to live by the rules a darkness will be lifted from you And by saying that on the first day there was this and God created that, it could simply mean that once you have accepted this way of living you will start to see the world anew God is the "Rules".......Jesus was the dude that explained the rules and tryed to make people understand........hence the son of god Organised church is just people forming a club around a belief system, nothing more.......like all clubs and commitees you will have a few people at the top telling you they know best...........it was ever thus and nothing has changed in mans nature so far!! If people chose to follow the bible literally then thats down to them and if they chose to look down on those that dont follow it so closely to the letter then thats their business also, again, its always been this way with human beings....its in out nature. What I do know is, there something more than us kicking about, dont know what it is or even if it has a name but its there..........it pumps into you out of the very roots of the soil when you stand in a beatiful place, or smell the air on a damp summer morning in the countryside, or when you just know something is right or wrong with a loved one.......dont know what it is, but its there. And I will chose that every time over bland, scientific nothingness........... When you pick small specific examples of things to try and poke fun at those, who actually, believe in something good and positive the only person who looses is you........your just adding to your negativity & blandness, us who believe in "something" wont loose, were happy as pigs in shit This has been the gospel according to WILF So what you are saying is, you are not religious but believe non-religious people can still spread the word that being nice to each other is generally a good thing to do? The 'something else' I don't understand but there is little anyone could disagree with there, but there are a couple of things I would disagree with. Firstly that you cannot take the piss out of people's beliefs, of course you can and the more people who learn to laugh at themselves the better, like a few extremist muslims need to learn (for example not murdering people for drawing cartoons). I don't mean in a bitter bullying way, but if someone starts saying they believe the sun is eaten by a god every day or that it only rains when they dance and try and tell you that if you don't believe them you are small minded, well forgive me if I point out the absurdity of it.. But these people will be dismissed as barmy and wouldn't really cause any problem, the issue is that religion is treated differently for NO good reason (religion = larger number of barmy people who say they believe the same thing whilst interpreting everything slightly different to suit themselves), we have priests in our government and clergy are always quoted as being the final word on moral authority for no other reason than they believe in an imaginary big brother style dictator. Does this sound fair to you? Can you really argue that the religious community behave any better than anyone else? Just look up the statistics for crime, teenage pregancy etc between atheists and the religious in the USA (as they are the most Christian and religious developed country that should be fair) then look at the most non-religious countries like Sweden or Denmark and see how they compare to more religious ones, you will consistently find atheism comes out on top. Secondly that you think that the natural world isn't as interesting or even bland? That is a mental statement to make in my opinion, how anyone can look at the world around them and not be amazed is beyond me, you only have to look at a few examples of how life has managed to survive and be blown away. Then if you start trying to ponder the universe, galaxies and black holes and wonder about the possibilities there could be when we finally understand quantum mechanics and if other dimensions could be proven to exist. Anyway I think everything in life is amazing and these two videos sum it up well, never will I understand why this isn't enough and I cannot say I think I am the one missing out as an atheist. The sum of it is, religion offers nothing positive to humanity other than acting as a security blankey type comforter to those scared of death (which obviously doesn't make it true), no prayer has ever been answered, no miracles happen and religious people do not act any kinder than atheists, they only act to the contrary the more religious they become. The fact is just because you want something to be true, doesn't make it so. If you choose to believe in 'something else' then crack on and no-one minds, but it shouldn't allow you any privelege and it certainly isn't a good reason to believe it.
