If you ain't gonna worry him then I will.

I am not a builder, just a brickie so my opinion is based on some experience. I would say that you have subsidence in the foundations. Sorry.   TC

Put some gaffer tape on it , won't make it any safer but you won't see the crack anymore.

Being serious for a second, I used to live in a street where all the houses on one side of the road had cracks similar to what your place is showing, they knocked them all down and rebuilt some nice new ones with piled foundations. Can put pictures up so you can compare if this would help!!

Do any of the other houses nearby have cracks? If not, it could well be a water leak and what you are seeing is accumalitive damage. It could be the hard frosts we had this winter, water has got into the cracks and made them look worse than they actually are.

You say you have been there 8 years, and the house was repointed when you bought. So it's safe to assume that whatever caused the damage in the first place happened before that. My guess would be a long hot summer causing ground shrinkage, that started the cracking and water penertating the cracks and freezing has made it worse. Just a guess though.

Fixed that for you. ;) Seriously though, we did have a really dry summer in 95 and a lot of houses suffered with ground shrinkage.
