appletree318is 21
The missus was working a night shift on Wednesday so thought i'd ask the game keeper if it was ok to come up to his yard and have a look around for some rats and try out my new illuminator. He said it was fine and I arrived alittle early at around half 7 and went in for a chat. I asked him if, as it I was abit early, if it was ok for a mooch round the woods behind his house as I would love to have a crackat dropping a rabbit or a pigeon as I'd only shot rats so far. He agreed to let me go round and said I was free to have shot at what ever was out but to keep an eye out for Maggie's and squirrels as he was after these especially. I set off and having never stalked up to a rabbit before was very cautious rounding the first corner, so cautious intact that I was nearly on top of a rabbit as soon as I came around the corner but only saw it as it ran off. This happened again as I rounded the next bend in the hedge line but then I saw in the distance a rabbit hopping about on the side of the field along the hedge line around 80yrd away. The lay out of the hedge was in my favour with there being two gate ways between me and the rabbit so I carefully walked down the left hand side of the hedge towards the second gate way and as I neared the gate way knelt down and looked around the right of the hedge to see the rabbit sat up on it's back legs looking right at me so I froze with the rifle shouldered and then slowly layed down using a water hose as a rest in front of me. As I lay down the rabbit dropped again and started to feed alittle before skipping off towards me and the centre of the field now at about 28yrds according to my scope and more or less on my zero I waited for the wind to drop and took the shot. Then rabbit stopped still, fell to it's side and gave a few kicks, on inspection the RWS superdome had entred just behind it's eye and exited just infront of it's ear to say I was happy is an understatement. Clean humane kill what more could I ask for. I stayed there untill 10.45 but didn't see a single rat so just as well I asked for the walk round. 1 Quote Link to post
