Rusty BSA Ultra

Hi all, any suggestions as to the best way to get this Ultra back to new please?

 

I got it off a mate, it had been in his shed over the winter ........... :icon_eek:

 

Not sure if I'll be keeping it or not once it is done, but I can't even have it in the house in this condition, it makes me sad to see anything in this state.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I was thinking of going the way of polishing it all, but not sure, is it a big job to have it all re blued?

 

I will be stripping and oiling the stock, that varnish is just nasty!

 

Gun has fired less than 2 fills worth of shots from new, but am thinking it would be wise to have a service anyway going by the condition of the outside!?

hi strong stuff the best thing to do is just bite the bullit and get it re blue`d.No matter how much youi try and clean rust off a gun barrell you wont have that much succsess if its gone too far(and looks like it has). So get re blue`d it`ll be worth in the end.And besides i dont thinks its that expensive.

Try some Youngs 303 Oil and some very fine grade steel wool. Treble or Quadruple Zero (that's 000 or 0000) which is usually available from plumbers merchants.

 

Get plenty of oil on the barrel (making sure you don't get any inside the barrel) and gently work the finish with the steel wool. The steel wool is fine enough not to scratch the finish providing you don't work it too hard, the Youngs will help dissolve the rust and remove it from the barrel without causing further damage to the finish.

 

It's imperative that you use a fine grade steel wool due to the delicate nature of the blueing. FFS don't use a Brillo Pad or anything like that!

 

From the pictures you've shown us it should be fairly straight forward to shift it without any expensive reblueing of the rifle and for a couple of quid in oil and steel wool it'll at least give you a chance to salvage the barrel before you consider anything more drastic.

alright there i had a supersport in the same sort of condition as that the rust had gone pretty far down so a took it to the local gunshop and got it all re-blued came back lookin pretty good a thought it was worth it a was just goin to get a new barrel glad i didnt now

What was the approximate cost of that mate please?

 

I'm definitely a bit cautious about the wire wool and oil, only because I haven't done it before, am sure it will work well, I've certainly got nothing to lose!!

I read somewhere that you shouldnt use WD40 on guns? Might just be the spring?

 

I honestly cant remember why, maybe someone can put me right or wrong?

Thats a re blue job mate.You can get cold blue,but the finish is patchy to say the least.Wd40,i've been wiping my gun's with this for years,never done any damage.What you dont want to do is get it in the chamber,cause's dieseling in spring gun's,and would totally wreck the inards of a precharge.HTH

well a took it to my local gunshop and he did it for 20 pound i just bought the stuff and he done the rest same back lookin verywell wat ever you choose hope it turns out alright mate

if you take it apart to reblue , make sure you know what youre doing re- valves and settings , refitting etc , also may need new seals .

BSA would service it for you for about £30 or £40 i would think ( mine cost me £41 including vat and del )

Just looked at it again now, it looks terrible!

 

ps . give them a bell , really easy to talk to , if you need any technical advice ask for john in the workshop ,

tell them you bougth it new from a local shop , that way you may even get it done as a freebie

oh and ask them to collect it , they have a parcel force account , this was also free .

all in all the best customer service i know .

I have a falcon air rifle and their bluing is known to be one of the worse there is, so if im lazy and dont oil it after an outing it will rust very quickly, allmost over night. Like chris jones has allready said, oil and wire wool does the trick then just oil it after every use
