Something slightly different , had a call out today from a nice old guy asking if I could help him with a problem he had with a deer ,"whats the problem ?" I've got a deer in my pond ...is it alive ?......yes ....it will get out when it wants ....been in there since yesterday ................i'l come over .....so I drive over to his place ...There in the pond is a fallow yearling ,emaciated , very small & clearly in trouble .She was in a foot or so of water just standing there .I went back to the van for a gun to end her misery , duly done (12g 3inmag) I pulled her out for a quick autopsy (my wife works for a vet which makes me nearly a doctor) on opening her the only really noticeable thing was the liver fluke , absolutely full of them , I see a couple of badly infected deer this season & this yearling was as bad if not worse .Why it decided to get in the pond I have no idea ,possibly a dog chased it ,why it couldn't get out or wouldn't get out remains a mystery .

On the up side whilst talking to the old fella about the deer I asked if he ever culled any only to be told its illegal , apparently 40 years ago he asked his local copper if he thought the police would let him have a firearms licence on his place , the copper said no way it wasn't big enough (24acres) so he left it ...the place is as safe a spot as you could wish for .Four paddocks surrounded by wood on a bank , it's made for deer !!.....on the promise I fill his freezer , he wants payback for 40 years of his garden being there larder, I can have the stalking , so a couple of high seats need to go up , a little pruning and see what turns up .According to his wife 50+ is not worth mentioning ,,we will see ....

Nice bit of luck there mate. I could only imagine the damage to the poor fellers garden !!

whilst out walking the dogs today. The bull\grey is allways in out the ditches. There was a big munty buck all bloated in one of the smaller streams. Never seen this before. Lord knows how it ended up there. Often find them in the local canal as they cant climb the steep sides but never in a shallow stream.

A G A , it was 3in mag sg ,from about 20 ft .....it was over kill, if there is such a thing in these circumstances . Having done a lot of call outs to r t a's I find it best to be prepared, I normally have sg in one barrel and 4s in the other. if its down I use the 4s if its standing I use the sg .I will often use the 22 as well on deer that are immobile , its very quite & discrete , I don't like using the 12 if there are people about unless its absolutely necessary , I think it looks a bit dramatic ..
