Saluki Men / Bringing On Pups / Summer Hares

Recommended Posts

good point speedie it seems to be more of a head count when you hear lads after a days hunting killed 3s and 4s, you never hear about a good tight run where the hare is being keeped in the 1 field for 20 or more good turns and gets away, to me that would be more enjoyable than a quick kill,

Legality has nothing to do with morals, or personal ethics. I would not run hares between second week in March, and middle of September, in actual fact i dont think I've ever run them before October

First off, this isn't a dig, it's a question. And obviously talking of pre-ban / Ireland.   I hear a lot of lads saying that when bringing on their coursing pups, they tried/ try to give them a few

That old chestnut "....because other lads will get there first if I don't..." doesn't equal 'respect for quarry'. To me, if you have morals then you have morals. If you don't have morals you pursue

i think youl go a long way to find a man who hasnt run doubled up or went out for a run on a nice summer evening or an early morning job an ran a hare out of its bed before it got a chance to wipe the blears out of its eyes

I don't think yea would find one banter but yea live and learn at least some people do but some lads seem to never learn

I haven't run hares on a summers evening but I've run dogs many times in doubled up competitions, under rules , when it was legal to do so.

Early morning hares have never appeared to be at any disadvantage to those run later in the day, imo,Certainly I'd say they are no more at a disadvantage than a dog that might have been stuck in the back of a 4x4/van for several hours without a chance to loosen itself up properly before running its quarry.

Young dog or bitch should be doubled up to get young dog or bitch going in my opinion as long as it's right time of year I was brought up September till feburary don't believe in running them through the summer but that was drilled into me from a young age

Sorry I misunderstood you. Kick-ups /slipping at short range on hares in their seats, before a hare has time to get into its stride imo , should come under a different heading other than coursing, in the interests of harmony , I won't say what category I would choose.

End of the day , its a mattter of individual conscience.

There is a vast amount of talk about morals and conscience in relation to wildlife what about the morals and consciences of the drum bangers over things like child exploitation , domestic violence, corruption in society ethically morally , morality has limited interpretation for some people The morally rightious in my experience are the very ones who commit all kinds of morally corrupt practices like saville obe etc but portray them selves as something else. I have said this year I intend to run one dog on as it happens I havent but should I decide that I want to it is my decision no one elses to many people are so keen to take a morally high standpoint they jump before all the facts or circumstances are before them certainly I am not going to justify myself to others I can live with my conscience

Imo if you were morally righteous you would not commit acts of paedophilia etc One naturally contradicts the other.

Domestic violence, child exploitation corruption in society are subjects that have no relevance to this topic ,which is about running hares during the summer months. The place to debate them is in the general topic section .

What facts or circumstances would one need to form an opinion on the subject of running hares in the summer ? Either you do ,or you don't, and people will either agree with you if you do , or they won't, it's a simple yes or no.

You say its your decision and that's the line I took on it , if you are comfortable doing it ,it's your call.

But you justified it in your post by saying others did it ,so you will.

You certainly don't have to justify yourself to anyone here.

It's your conscience, not mine or anyone else's

Do you have a problem with people taking what you term " a high moral standpoint?"

I said in my post that If I didnt run my land others would not I was doing it because they were. As for the rest you brought up morals and conscience so morality in society encompasses all aspects not selective fragments

I mentioned morals, and conscience as they apply to one's own ehtical viewpoint regarding hunting hares during the summer.

The other subjects you brought up, have absolutely no connection with hunting whatsoever, and are therefore ,as I said, irrelevant to the argument.

Unless you think child abuse, child exploitation ,and domestic violence have anything in common with hunting, including them in your post is neither germane , nor relevant to the thread.

Desertbred, as inan says, no one is questioning anyones morals on other subjects. It is morally wrong and also illegal to take game outside of season. If you want to take hare using dogs in countrys whereby it's illegal is your business but taking young hare or taking hare out of season is morally wrong however you fluff it up. Exactly the same as taking other game out of season. Giving excuses merely makes you feel better

brendy,we are all guilty of this sin ,to slip a pup in to a run hare to get it started,it was allways the done thing here in ireland an all them top lads done it.sometimes when you get a bit older an want to want to go out an have a few runs,on land where you have permission you dont want to be killing your own sport,a few dropped rabbits does the same job,an when my pups are able an old enough let them out at a hare
