Saluki Men / Bringing On Pups / Summer Hares

Recommended Posts

First off, this isn't a dig, it's a question. And obviously talking of pre-ban / Ireland.

I hear a lot of lads saying that when bringing on their coursing pups, they tried/ try to give them a few runs over summer on easy hares etc.

Every coursing man, seems to have young dogs to bring on every year for the next season.

So is this common practice? Does it not go against what they preach, in terms of giving the hare fair respect? And also, can it not potentially f**k up the dog running on hard ground in the heat after sally?

Legality has nothing to do with morals, or personal ethics. I would not run hares between second week in March, and middle of September, in actual fact i dont think I've ever run them before October

That old chestnut "....because other lads will get there first if I don't..." doesn't equal 'respect for quarry'. To me, if you have morals then you have morals. If you don't have morals you pursue

The days of open and close seasons have well gone now I never used to run in summer this year I am keeping 1 dog going because I see that many do it regular. If I am not running my land and every other f****r is thats a sign of the times we live in

Seen that loads of times mate. You see a few hares over the summer, loads of rabbits, come the winter, f**k all.

Mine had only a few rabbits last season, wont run him on hare (unless 1 pops up unexpected while out walking) until late august at the earliest... Only thing i will deliberately run him on will be the lure until then

I have been putting my youngen on a few rabbits, and will continue too, not hammering them, only every couple of weeks or so when the weather suits, for a couple of runs.

To me, it is important for the bitch to know what she is for, quite early on.
