hi buddy

i would be careful about shooting wood pigeon in your garden?

i don't shoot them as a rule in my garden as the general licence on wood pigeon in your garden is a bit grey!

have a look here

http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/ourwork/regulation/wildlife/licences/generallicences.aspx

and just to clarify, one of the terms.

The limits of this licence
f) This licence permits action only for the purposes specified in paragraph 1. You may not use it to
prevent damage to other forms of property (such as damage to houses or cars) or to prevent
nuisance (such as excessive noise).

i know there was a case last year i think? which a air gunner was convicted of shooting wood pigeon in there back garden.but then i suppose if you have a veg patch or a blackberry bush ,then this would be acceptable? as your would be protecting fruits & veg?

this needs clarifying!

but wood pigeon cooked properly,is absolutely lovely

cant be too carefull mate, as davy said, evidently a pest is only a pest sometimes

the magpies in my neighbours tree make soo much fackin' noise, its unreal that i cant just -safely and responisbly and cleanly- pop them one in the napper and problem solved,

i would be doing the whole street, and the local songbird population a massive favour, but the law would come down on me like a ton of sh1t if someone called the 5-0, because shooting them to shut them up is not a valid term on the general licence.

stupid and frustrating i know but thats how it goes i guess.

The General Licence is a touch ambiguous, but you can be sure you'll have the law, RSPCA, RSPB and every other agency on you like a ton of bricks. Not worth the grief mate.

Best bet is to join the BASC and give them a call to check what the law says. They'll also back you up with legal protection.

i have spoke to BASC once i see this post, and there say is as long as you stick to the terms of the general license you will be ok?

personally i wouldn't risk it!

it will be down to you to prove, your were acting within the terms of the general license,if you are a BASC member?

some how i cant see them putting a whole legal team together to fight your case? i just get that feeling.

No am not basc covered but I will be sacs covered very soon they also do very good protection cover for me dogs incase am accused of my staff being a pitbull terrier if the law say she is even thou she is full ped u don't stand much chance with out the help of sacs

In my area it's a bit ruff tbh and I don't think to many people care about much theres worse things happing to care about me

My mates dad had a pellet fall out the Sky and crack him on his head he called the police they said don't worrie it's probably some kids shooting birds and missed and thst was that

We're i shoot its safe and unseen other then next door who wants some to try any way I won't kill birds in front of there kids thou so I get out early

But I hear what you say and thank you for looking in to it mate ill just got to my permission I think there's always so do gooder knocking about thing is I bet there cars ain't getting splattered all day lol

Nice dog! I love to hunt in my garden, which is nearly two acres of lawn, trees, scrub and plenty of woodies - though they seem to have wised up to me!

Regarding law, they are eating my crops. I grow my own veg and they are keen to eat the seedlings, so I must use some pest control. My neighbours know I have an air rifle and I tell them I'm hunting pigeon and even offer them some if they like. I thnk it is important to let your neighbours know what you are doing, so if they hear a gun they don't worry, they just know what it is - it helps a lot..l

I don't put don't feed or use decoys or use a hide,, I just try to stay hidden and look for targets. Does anyone else do this,or am I really getting it wrong? I don't get that many!

Cheers,

Ed

By the way, did say I loved the dog, but also - I have a terrier that loves to hunt with me,, he gets really excited if I pick up the gun but he's so enthusiastic he just races around scaring all the wildlife away. I wonder how you keep your dog quiet when hunting...? :-)
