The Only Way Is Straight

Recommended Posts

Evening chaps, chapets and miles,

I have had a few people recently pick up my rifle and fire a few shots, apart from the obvious high praise of workmanship that's gone into the rifle what with it being stage 2 tuned from SFS everyone has commented that my scope is very slightly canted over one way, and I mean very slightly!

Now to me it looks near enough straight and I'm stacking pellets on top of each other at 25 yards so my question is: will having a slightly canted scope according to others really effect the poi? Or does that only matter if the scope is blatantly canted right over?

Thanks for that porky! But back on topic does anyone know if this would effect accuracy over greater range? I'm reluctant to correct it as to me it looks straight but could be the way I hold my rifle?

Evening Phil, I think you'd find your pellets landing slighty left or right from the vertical crosshair at distances over 35/40 yards.

I usually set my rifles up with a small spirit level and plumb line. Spirit level to make sure the rifle is level and plumb line to align the vertical crosshair; only have to do it once

Sometimes I think that my scope is not on straight, then I try to hold the gun straight and it looks ok then. Surely it will only matter if you re-adjust the zero. If you are not holding the gun straight then that is the thing you must correct.

Cheers guys, looks like its a trip to b&q for a mini spirit level and plum line lol

Or you could align your scope's horizontal crosshair with a spirit level set out in your garden. Providing you can ensure your rifle is level it works equally fine. I've used both methods

Phil,

Ive got all the kit to level your scope properly mate.

If you feel like popping around tonight we can do it for you mate.

I will explain to you then the effects of rifle cant in diagram format which is easier to understand mate.

That's how I understood the effect.

Funny, my scope on my rifle seemed true, handed it to Mawders he says "Scope's canted over to the right" WTF!

I pick up his rifle "Mate, scope's canted over to the left".

The bugger is, now he's said it, I can see it.....mind you, I did set it up by resting it on a horizontal surface and lining the reticule up with the vertical lines of a breeze block wall. Not perhaps the most scientific method.

I think people hold their rifle at a different angle.. for example my brother holds mine full blown sideways like a black gangsta with a pistol.. and im talking a hw97k LOL

But if i set mine up with a spirt level im pretty sure it would be canted to the left at quite an angle due to my body shape and posture and scope to eye alignment...

everyone holds their rifle differently.

There's an element of truth there skot which is why most FT shooters use these: http://www.intershoot.co.uk/acatalog/Centra-Level-I-164.html I've been considering one myself for my Annie but am too stubborn and can't justify the spend.. just try harder! Takes all the fun out too, it can all get a bit OTT Edited by Elliott
