What Your Favorite Terrier For Ratting?

Recommended Posts

I'm far from saying my plummer is anything special but i'm yet to see a terrier beat her in numbers caught or rats marked.

Here's a few pics of one time when we were threshing, you can see a few terriers about, then there's a pic of the plummers marking, what there marking is 8 rats under a big concrete block which we had to use a tractor to tow out.The other terriers didn't suss they were there until we were on to moving it,the last pic is the end of day pic so the other terriers knew what rats were but it was the plummers who caught the most and marked the best as usual :tongue2::laugh:

seen most of the breeds kill rats, but the best dog ever seen was a Russell bitch of my brothers.intelligence almost human, infact more intelligent than a lot of the people I have been with, which says a lot.heard the plummer terriers are good but never had the opportunity to see one work.

I'd agree with HM an others, if it goes an goes well, that'll do...

Maybe I'm lucky, because i've honestly seen most breeds rat, propper rat too, from your early Plummer book mainstays, Lakie, Border, Russell & Fell/ Patterdale, to Plummers, Beddies, Cairns, Westies even Yorkies!

Seen a couple of cracking Fox terriers I'll never forget too and just about every cross twixt all these an others...

My fave... :hmm: Well, 'ol DBP weren't wrong when he talked about those fiery dogs and Johnny D knew his stuff too, because for me, from way back when I seen loads of terriers go, if I had to do it all again, them Black & Tans would still be my first choice...

Trotter/ Pip this ones for you two. Taken with the cameraman stood on the wooden bridge across the Alt, the fence line behind me that you can see is the start of the Tip (landfill site) as it was back in the mid 80's when this pic was taken. Baw, I had hair then...

I still say if i had only one ratting dog it would have to be a plummer, athletic, good nose and born to it, i have to admit that i too have a soft spot for a good black n tan though, but i,v seen some very good ratters that were whippets, atb, buster.

i know a lot of people say all terriers will rat but there is a big difference between a terrier nailing a bolting rat and one that will find, mark and know to wait for a bolt then nail 200+ rats in one outing, just my opinion

had some good days on the rats, out of all the 8 terriers we've had between us the best by far was my plummer dog, here, there, everywhere, would find when others couldn't and was always in the right place at the right time, his son was lazy in comparison if a rat came within a metre it was dead and dead quicker than his sire could kill it, but if it was more than a metre away it got away coz he just wouldn't try, ha, and had a very poor nose for finding, but he was an accident as apposed to planned mating, his dam was a tottery 11yr old Russell when my 6month old plummer took advantage, lol. my old whippet was the boss in hen runs and paddocks and hedges with space to run, and could get to the rats 1st, but in sheds, byres, stables the terriers were sharper, very good cheap entertainment for all involved
