jf1970 328
lads Just got a 12 month old lurcher dog from a friend.. the dog has been looked after and has been fed well thing his he hasnt been outon the lead much at all just around the estate.. ive managed to get him walking quite well on the lead now .. just asking for some tips to get him free from the lead working on his recall and how do i break him in to quarry at this age any tips lads if youve been inthe same position? cheers i havn't been in the same position as regards the age of the dog, imo though i would treat it as a pup, i wouldn't bother with any quarry for now, get the basics together first, bonding, sit, stay, recall and broken to stock, do this through the summer months and take it from there. stripes 401
yes tuck the best of luck with your pup, continue too road walk him, spending as much time as you can with him helps with the bonding, have you a closed yard were you can let the dog off the lead and really praise him when he comes back. Remember keep the cool and dont sicken him. you can use a treat to give him when he comes back on command..next step rabbits have you any permission to run land. Quote Link to post
Friar Tuck 9
yes i have some closed land and a little bit of permission hes a real nice pup but was becoming a sofa dog i was just worried it was a little to late but i will persevere with him on the lead through the summer.. its his recall i think will take the most work hes got alot of saluki in him and his selective hearing is 2nd to none haha Quote Link to post
stripes 401
Youre friend has done no basic training with him at all? after you get on top of the recall and other basic commands, the next step is stock breaking only attempt this when you have the other commands 100%, first permission to do the stockbreaking , this is going to be a tough step because of his age, i myself would of started this earlier on. keep the dog on a leash and walk past the stock correcting when you have to, be stern its a valuable lesson. Next time give the dog a longer leash enough for him to run and if he heads for the stock give him a tug to stop him, this way you can control him at distance. Never raise your hand to the dog keep a rolled up newspaper in your pocket and be stern. just repeat different days until he takes no notice of stock.. Its not going to be easy,, best of luck to you,, keep us posted. Iam sure other members have there methods and can also help you. Quote Link to post
