Nilrc Charity Dog Show At " The Field Of Dreams " Gulladuff Maghera Last Sunday 28Th April 13

Recommended Posts

Up bright and early last Sunday morning, Dogs and trailer loaded up, Sat Nav switched on, and soon we discovered the road before us was leading to the “ Field of Dreams” Schooling Track “ at Gulladuff, Maghera. Along the way we Joined up with Mickey and Michael Quinn , had our breakfast at the BallyRobin on the Airport road on the way , and arrived at the “Field of Deams “ at 10.00am.

This is where the dreams of so many Whippet, Lurcher, Terrier and Greyhound men and women came true with all their worthy winnings last weekend.

The venue was the “Field of Dreams “ schooling track ,Guladuff. This is an established family run business, owned and run by the Hurley family. The Race Track is top class, and has progressed from strength to strength over the past few years. This was the venue for the Nilrc 1st annual Dog Show of the year, and was held with kind permission of the Hurley Family. All monies collected at this show will be donated to the “Childrens Baby Unit” Antrim Hospital.

The Nilrc show and race day was a real family day out. This was very evident by the large number of children who took part in the childrens handling class. Even though the rain was not kind to us, the smile on those kids faces brought sunshine all around us. These young boys and girls are our show organisers/huntsmen and women of tomorrow, and above all will preserve and promote our country sport long after we have gone. It was a treat to see so many young fathers, all good Lurcher/Terrier/ Whippet and Greyhound folk, all giving their children an interest in life. And what better than the Canine world for this. Keep up the good work with the little ones.

As the racing started, the cheering began, and with a packed audience the excitement did not stop to the last race romped home. What a race track, pure gold. All dogs finished safe and sound with not an injury in sight. The showing followed after the racing. Here are the Results :

A very special thanks to the Judges, Tom Barry/lee Archer/Ian Greer/Margaret Mc Stay / Davy Best, and Master of Cermonies Nigel Greer. Not always an easy job, but all carried it out with perfection. They say behind every great man is a great women. Well this was very true on Sunday. Many thanks Arlene Richardson, and children, Heather Greer and family, and last but not least, Leanne Barry and family, for all your help, hard work, and organisation. We could not off succeded without you. Clicking away there all day with his camera was photographer Richard Mark, happily recording all our moments of glory. It was nice to meet up with you Mark , and a job well done.

I always leave the best to last. Words cannot express how grateful the NILRC is to the “ Field of Dreams Schooling Track “ for affording the opportunity to the club to run their show at your magnificent Race Track. As secretary of the NILRC, I want to extend our thanks on behalf of the club, to the owners of the track Mr Joe Hurley Senior, and Karen and Joe Hurley Junior, for your generosity and kindness towards the NILRC and the Charity it was run for, The childrens Baby Unit at Antrim Hospital.

At this point I would like to thank the club for the beautiful gift they presented me with on Sunday. There was no need for it, but it was so much appreciated. I do this job as a labour of love. You are a great bunch of men and women to work with, and long may it continue.

And now for the news that makes all the hard work worthwhile. As a result of the NILRC show, Sponsors, your attendance and generosity at the show, and most of all “ The Field of Dreams “ for allowing it to happen. The childrens Baby Unit at Antrim Hospital will receive a cheque for £1,515. A big thank you to all of you, and give a thought to how many sick little children this money will help in some small way. I look forward to meeting up with you all at the rest of the shows during the year.

Margaret,

As usual you have 'hit the target' with your report. It sounds as if it was a great event with a great outcome to a good charity and one that can create positive PR for the terrier, lurcher and whippet fraternity.

The Tally Ho Dog Show and Raceday Saturday 3rd May 2025
As 7am on Saturday morning 3rd May 2025 rang out loud and clear in our house, I crawled out of bed and thanked god for allowing me another day on this beautiful landscape of ours called the Emerald Isle. With the joys of spring in my heart, Mr Fox away on his summer holidays, the work in the field completed for another season, it was show time again on this side of our Island.
Suddenly the seasons were telling me it was Tally Ho show time of the year again and time to get our Canine friends in the show ring and on the race course, for the start of the summer Dog show and Race Days schedule.
Some of us have had joyous occasions in our families since the last showing season, and some of us may have had great sadness, as fate can throw all sorts of problems in the pathway of life. As we dusted ourselves down after our winter woes, Saturday was a day to leave all our cares of yesterday behind and head to Crumlin for  the Tally Ho  annual dog show and race day.  And what a days enjoyment with our loyal Canine friends that was.
The weather was beautiful, but tinged with an east wind that would cut you in two. As we approached the field, we could see very clearly there was very little parking space left. Each year this show grows bigger and better. Peter Morgan being the caring gentleman he is made sure he kept a parking space for the now 2 senior citizens and of which we were very grateful.
By midday the field was full to capacity.  In the show rings there was a big turnout and a great mix of top quality dogs in all categories. 22 races and 28 children in child handling class.
As I moved around the rings, I met up with some old friends and some new ones too. Michael Reilly travelled up all the way from Tipperary. Yapper Hayes came up from Kilkenny and Stephanie O Connor and family and Mc Grath Family travelled up from Carlow.  All great doggie people and support every show and race day North and South of the border.
Stands were situated around the show ground. Paul Boyd with loads of canine supplies/ Alannah Harpur and her sister with some beautiful Tea Shirts and Mugs and Mary Kate Quinn was there with her amazing art work . What an interesting and talented lady to speak to. There was a burger stand on site and 4 toilets dotted all around the field.
Our children as usual were well cared for by the Tally Ho show organiser Peter Morgan, both in the ring and outside it. Two bouncy castles were on site and inside the ring were trophys, medals and big bags of sweets for every child. A real childrens paradise. Some sleepy we people on Saturday night.
Time waits for nobody. The moment had arrived after the long cold winter to get our Canine friends out of the field and into the show ring and on the Race course.
