handling class is this for real !what happened to the good old fashioned terrier\lurcher show that was relaxed and a pleasent day out to chat and enjoy the break in the off season it all seems to be g

i dont usually post on these topics as im sort of in all camps lol,im not interested in an argument ,my views are from all sides as i work my dogs all season show and race in the summer and run a show

working terrier\lurcher shows are nt what they used to be for obvious reasons but its still a place for men\lads with working dogs to take there young pups along or old retired dogs for a bit of a loo

People do seem to be getting increasingly emotional about racing and showing there dogs...It really should all be a bit of fun at the end of the day.

I always think of my most favourite movie production in these cases, which is LURCHER MANIA...A genuine CLASSIC from many years ago....

That unforgettable voice and accent clearly stated - "A Lurcher is not a Lurcher unless HE or SHE brings home the supper......

Maybe some will disagree, but for me PERSONALLY that is the definition of the working dog

working terrier\lurcher shows are nt what they used to be for obvious reasons but its still a place for men\lads with working dogs to take there young pups along or old retired dogs for a bit of a look round and have a chat to like minded men about what sort of season they had what young dogs there running on etc etc but theres people and they know who they are that treat the WORKING DOG SHOWS as there main reason for keeping dogs they actually dont even work there dogs during the winter months and there season so to speak only starts this time of year rosette season !fooking mystifies me theres plenty of proper shows and show dogs these people could get involved in because as i ve said before the honest working dog is on a slippery slope and weather they realise it or not these people are helping to push them further on down that slope imo

well said dee... look at the end of the day most of the people who argue on here about shows are really more worried who won a race or a rosette...not what there dog done during the winter months.... a lurchers real test is in the field twisting turning and hopefully catching there quarry...and if its a lurcher used for fox control then yes a quick dispatch is also very important for it to be done humanely... and if its a terrier then he should be out in the wind, the rain sleet snow, living for what he was meant to do and that is to face a very worthy advisary underground.....

Now vermin catcher if you want to be witty about things and say bar all the men in a working mens club who dont work.... yes your right ...what are you doing in a working mans club if you on the dole then yes..like a working dog show if they dont work then in my opinion they shouldnt be there lol.. and who would have the neck to go into a working mans club...if his whole life was spent on the dole...

It was me who made the comment about working mans club. Just had a look at the shows advertised, very few of them are advertised as working. My first show i ever went to was nearly twenty years ago and in comparison to the few i went to last year it was poor. The few i went to last year had far more dogs, greater crowds and more events for the dogs than in previous years. There's as much bitching that goes on within the working scene. Just look at the posts and topics in the lurcher section. I've been out hunting with my own dogs when my dog never missed a rabbit and the person i was out with ripped my dog to shreds running it down when i wasn't there.....and i bet many of you have similar stories to tell. I enjoy working my dog, ferreting and fishing but also enjoy the shows especially the racing. I just can't understand why many of you come across as against the shows.

Tandragee shows were first class............having been involved in running them I can confirm Leeview that there was NO money involved, but nice trophies, dog food and a hell of an after show party!!! However, we didn't have "handling" classes, but we did have whippet classes, and the show was called Tandragee Working Dog Show..........most of the whingers on here weren't even going to shows when the last Tandragee show as run!!!

i dont usually post on these topics as im sort of in all camps lol,im not interested in an argument ,my views are from all sides as i work my dogs all season show and race in the summer and run a show. firstly it is a show no judge can tell if a dog is working in a ring it may have marks on it but these prove nothing other than the dog has had a cut. to use a sayin from a friend of mine "a show should be judged on conformation not mutilation" working trails were the only way to prove working ability and sorry to say they wont be back, from a show organizer point of view, you cant have a show without the showing so you need all sides of the coin to walk in to the ring and support a few classes and not just stand outside all the time. racing has taken over as the hot topic lately but it will take a few shows to sort out these new ways.its the same amount of dogs so it can be sorted, its only the start of may yet and it would be a long summer without them. I agree wth fat ferret itshould be about having a fun day out. If you win something Bonus. But the only people on here runnun shows down ar those thatdont win anything. If ur. Gonna b such bad losers don't go. Do what YOU want to do with ur own dog and leave the shows alone.
