R.A.W 1,987
start off simple mate. don't get suck into the kind of tackle that catches fishermen rather than fish. start off with a little quiver tip rod and a half decent reel you should e able to bag most of your target species and it's great fun watching the rod bend around. go somewhere wheres theres plenty of fish flick out a few maggots on a float and you should have some fun. good luck 1 Quote Link to post

.WARREN. 288
DONT GET A BOX TO SIT ON, GET A CARPING CHAIR,PICK THEM UP NEXT TO NOTHING,TRY 1 ROD FOR CARP & 1 FOR FOR SMALLER FISH THEN SEE WHICH YOU LIKE MOST, ATB Quote Link to post
NEWKID 27,143
Go and have a walk along the canal mate and have a yap to the lads fishing, watch them a while and see what they're using/ catching etc If its a standard canal start off fishing fairly light and as close to features as you can ( lily lads, rushes, overhanging trees etc) they all hold fish... I prefer fishing a pole on the canal but you could use a float set up, plumb the depth properly, you want to be just on the bottom 9 times out of 10, use maggot or caster and feed little and often a a few maggots every cast, ground bait can be good on lots of canals... If your after perch don't forget the worms, chop a few up and fish close the weeds, fish a small worm on the hook and feed the chopped worms around it ( this can be deadly for perch).. If your going to ledger a small swim feeder is a good idea, cast regularly and accurately to build the bait in the swim,.. In the summer the fish should be feeding well so you can feed a bit more, Once your catching a few your confidence will build, try bigger baits ( corn, bread, meat etc) for the tench, bream or carp.. You should find the roach and perch obliging to start you off though mate Good luck Quote Link to post
brucemyster 75
Get yourself to a commercial fishery, plenty of bites plenty of fish and plenty of guys willing to give advice(in fact by the end of the day you'll be glad to get rid of 'em all) worse thing you could do is fish somewhere that's not gonna get the rod bending early on. Once you've honed your skills move on to more difficult venues. First thing you should buy before you consider the pros and cons of rods, reels and terminal gear is your rod license!! Don't forget it's the closed season at the mo' so commercial fisheries are probably the only place you can fish right now anyway 1 Quote Link to post
billybaltic 308
Once you know the basics try to get out as much as you can and you will learn something most day's, i.e. how they respond to different feeding, float or feeder, bait choice, the list is endless, i'm still learning after 30 years, but thats why we love it, just get out there and enjoy it. 1 Quote Link to post
audiguypaul 28
Join a local club that has several waters for you to choose from, stay away from commercial carp fisheries unless you want to pay £25 for 24hrs and be rammed in at weekends. Get yourself a good all round rod, unless you are fishing for big carp an allrounder will be fine and some new stuff is cheap enough now. be careful buying from carboots unless you know what you are looking at as there is a lot of stolen stuff about, tackle thefts are becoming more and more common, if the seller doesnt seem to know what he is talking aboiut then be wary. There is loads of good stuff on the net and plenty of forums plus utube which is full of advice. Dont forget to buy an EA rod licence before you fish, available from them online or post office. Rember its called fishing and not catching for a reason, enjoy. Quote Link to post
