border lad 1,047
there is Stockmen, people who understand there annimals, and try to do there best for them, excersize, feed, work, when I was a young Lad, I was lucky, there was knowledgeable stockmen about, people who worked the hounds, Foxhounds, otterhounds, then the coursing greyhounds, track greyhounds, Another old fellow a Dealer, always had a decent dog about him, his dogs were trained to Hunt off the road, do its job and carry back to Hand, he said the dog is there to Hunt, I am retired now the past 3 years, THE SPIRIT IS STRONG, BUT THE FLESH IS WEAK,,, vaulting 5 bar gates and fences, and running across fields, those days are long gone, I have found in the past, if a fellow did not work he was not much use other than a couch potatoe, and knocking kids out of the missus, and of course there is a few who excell in living off benefits, dealing with stuff you would not touch, etc,, but do they make better dogperson???? I dont think so but its nice to have a couple of spare hours on your hands to train and exercise the old mutts, per day, 2 Quote Link to post
Phil Lloyd 10,738
When I was 'resting' ,..and unemployed,...I definitely had far better running dogs.. No question about it,...and the reasons were fairly obvious,...I slept by day,..and I walked by night...every night.... I trespassed everywhere, and hit anywhere, I fecking liked... My attitude was also different,...and I would not entertain a quitter, a jibber, or any canine that could not earn his corn.. This kind of behaviour and total callousness, towards my chosen quarry and hunting partners,.was shameful... Thank feck, I grew up and smelt the coffee,..... Now,.I am a spent force,.grateful for the odd day out,.as are my dogs,..but,..we are happy, and that's what really counts Edited May 1, 2013 by CHALKWARREN 8 Quote Link to post
arcticgun 4,548
no point in having all the time in the world for the dogs if you cannot be arsed in first place personally I think its down to the individual , you get out what you put in, end of story. I work 24 hr shifts and keep three adult lurchers, one pup, one terrier and one spaniel, and a falcon, mind am lucky me wife and kids pitch in now and again, its down to managing your time, days I work I simply get up 5am and either walk or jog all the runnign dogs out, then take all of em down field for an hour mooching about , then off to work, missus and kids see to em on evening, short walks etc, the best side of the long shifts however is more days off a month , them days Im out three or four times a day working exercising them etc or flying me bird or out with mates, maybe theres a comprimise and I could do more or better with more time but I simply prefer to pay me own way rather than leave it too others to do so mind if I ever lost my job the dogs would be my salvation and Id love the chance too be able to put even more time into them........................... whippet 99 2,613
maybe dogs are part of there job.......like pest controlling ..... i got 6 dogs and im not working ,...its too many really ..........whippets dont count really tho..... but will be looking for pet home for the old terrier...housework ,....kids ,....school....and dogs a busy combination for a single parent......i would never manage a job on top .....otherwise dogs would have to go.........fooking hard work.......but in two years my youngest can go too big school on his own then i will have too look at work ,....and consider my options Good honest post that. if you have dogs, work, kids and a mrs or single parent, something has to be deprived of attention. There are only so many hours in the day. I think its ok if the dogs aren't pups, its trying to give a pup enough time to do it justice I find would be the hardest. I'm thinking of getting a pup and I honestly don't have the time. I know you think cos I post a lot I'm on here a lot but in truth, I ain't. I work 6am till 2, the time I spend on here. I'm lucky I have a job I can do that. I have enough time before and after work to deal with the dogs and the other shit I get upto but bit different with a pup. i had a strong feeling that you were on here whilst working .......fair play Quote Link to post

BOLIO1 1,078
The best dog/stockman I ever met worked (still does) as a bricklayer, is a great family man and built his own house and facilities for his livestock which are second to none I've seen. whippet 99 2,613
the question dont really make much sense......yes time put into your dog will get it too its full potential but it wont make it run faster and it wont change habits ..........but everytime you take your dog out it will have learnt something........it helps too take them out too different places to see different quarry, landscapes,....smells ,..livestock..etc etc every dog is different and they will only get better to there potential......... i go out every day and i think its very important too excercise dogs daily, clean kennels , ..feed ,....hunt what ever... lets be honest a fit dog doesnt get like that just because of a stroll in the park ,......theres hours a day put into them ........ what you aim to do is give the dog the best chance of being ABLE to do its job too its full POTENTIAL ........and some put more work than others into them but that doesnt make the dog any better than a dog that hasnt had as much time put in to it........that comes down to dedicated breeding from the best of the best.....decades not a punt in the cmw..... theres no such thing as good dog men ,.........they do what they can under there circumstances,.......for there own reasons......some will hunt all year ,....some will fitness excercise every day,....some will be out for nice quite strolls for a hour or two.........some will hunt different quarry........some will need fitness,.....some will need to rely on nose.....what ever you choose it dont make any body better than any other man and there dogs......... an egg is an egg you can take it out and polish it every hour of every day .....it dont mean its any better than the next ....... as its inside what counts .......but what you put into it also helps ,.........whever its scrambled , poached or fried .........we will never differ there will be arseholes with dogs and there will be men and woman who try and get the full potential out there dogs...........but there will always be better out there... 1 Quote Link to post
