the monkey 339
I seen them many a time always on windy days not hovering as a kestrel would but flying into the wind at the same speed as the flow so not going any where
romany52 313
Not uncommon , I've seen plenty, they hover just like a Kestrel. The best thing I saw, was one chase and out fly a Crow, the Crow ditched at the last minute but the Buzzard took it on the ground.
Malt 379
I posted exactly the same sort of thread in the BoP section last year after I saw one hovering for the first time, they can do it and they can do it surprisingly well. Whether its only certain ones which learn the behaviour or they can all do it, I don't know because I've seen buzzards all my life and never saw one hover until last year. Maybe its a behavior they've reverted to with the population being so high? When there wasn't so many about there would have been more to scavage so a high energy flapping manuvoure wouldn't have been the most efficent way of looking for food.. WILF 47,354
Just hovering.......low?......that's handy !! Lol lol lol
Jay Argh 6
Have seen a few do 'proper' hovering, and many just 'hanging' on an updraft or thermal. Apparantly, those that can actually hover pass on the knack to their offspring, so the numbers of Buzzard seen hovering is on the increase. Well, that's what I heard, anyway.
