paulsmithy83 567
Well feck,.. ever eating that cold porridge,...there is no future in that grey game.... Get your drift Wilf,..regarding why folk suddenly opt for using various exotics, to try and produce a better/different style of hunting dog....and yes,..a great many folk, just seem to flick through the pages of a canine encyclopedia and think,."now that would be a good critter, to put over a Greyhound".. That being said,.a few others,..give such projects a brave try,.but they usually keep things, 'in house' ,..and retain the good ideas and success stories,..and abandon the foolish wastes of effort,... For my sins, I've stood in both camps... The Malamute would not be my choice,.however,..I've spent some time with Siberian Huskies, Sledge Dogs, whatever,..and I like them, plus it is something that has been tried, many years ago...The guys that created various examples, locally,..have always extolled the virtues of the mix,..and to be 100% honest,.I've had my finger on that red button for decades.... As a functional working canine with amazing physical attributes,.the best of these incredibly varied types really are quite something... Personaly,...I would have enjoyed getting a breeding program going, but time has run out for me,...I've missed the boat,...and as wee all know, supposition, boasts and hunches, mean feck all. Talk is dirt cheap,..but,....one can never say never, eh... We put , isnt the sib the most athletic . Bit like the saluki in terms can run at flat out pace over long distances were malamutes are the heavy load carryin plodders. From wat I seen there a shit load more drive in them sibs there be the racing sibes , very fast and relentless ,40k races round forestry i was a spectator at many of these round the local forestry blocks , indesructable and also loyal and good guards . atb bunnys. If we was in colder climate I think they would add lot of qualities they seem alot more driven then mal and athletic but then would they still open up like mals??? I think for this country if you like those type dogs the gsd x ticks the boxes Quote Link to post

WILF 46,596
chalkwarren.thats a nice looking dog well built powerful thick pads good coat good stamina great bone.if combined right with the greyhound genes .bingoOk, I will allow myself to be drawn in for a second......these are not rabbit dogs you are breeding, so never mind the " mechanics" of such an animal, what is the animals history of mental attitude to " hard & heavy" situations and by what measure has this been tested ?? Like all of us, I have seen some truly stunning physical examples who could hold their own in random " heavy" situations but when push really came to shove the old head and heart were found to be wanting.......given the fact that its so hard to find a handy animal with years of breeding behind it what is the point of this random messing around ? I am not trying to be flippant and I will freely admit others will know much better than me but I have never heard of anyone who is killing serious amounts of serious tackle using any of these types of crosses, certainly not in England......if they were that good folk would have been using them since time in memorial to kill hefty amounts of game They may very well use them in country's that have vast open plains on which such an animal can literally run down a quarry species but our geography is simply not like that........there are some very capable killing machines already been thought up and very thoroughly tested to the limit and beyond.......why just play around especially when it's with a living, sentient creature. beast 1,884
beast.germanshepherds can catch foxes.gsdxg if they throw right do catch hares easily compared to a dog that has to chase it for four minutes thats of course if the dog dont run out of runway i know gsd catch foxes, used to run my pures with the lurchers but it was the lurchers that did the catching, the gsd just did the crunching. however, your post said that the heavy slow mal xs would take foxes. not sure what you mean by the second bit of your post? if gsd x takes hares easy all the match boys would be using them Quote Link to post
stewie 3,387
not gonna read the whole thread as i no how it will go..........but every cross has been slagged off from pillar to post at one point or another..........so surely the malamute x is just another type to be ripped apart by the experts who have never seen any of that cross work....................... Huan72 687
I cant say what a mal will enter into the mix, but I have owned a 1st cross GSD/Husky bitch, called her Isis as she had the egyption eye make up thing going on. Clever, really fast with staying power, agile, physically outstanding but behaviour was a bit twitchy, highly strung. Could fly through forrest as if it were flat land. As BG has previously said about the mal crosses needing carefull handling, she did, but for physical ability in every sense, she was outstanding. If the genetics bouced right in a breeding I can ony imagine the possibilities if she had ever bred with a greyhound, but her temperamant was so twitchy I wouldnt have bred her. She wasnt specially bred, no lines, just a cross I happened to get but one of those dogs......a natural athlete. Quote Link to post
