Gitano 17
Cheers again for the info and vids BORDERSCOT The kettlebells was something I contemplated competing in a while back, but the problem is I'm in rural Spain and would really need to hook up with somebody to show me correct technique. I'm currently just flinging them about like a loon Although I clean and push press the single 32 kg 30 times, I'm sure anybody who had a clue would p*ss themselves laughing at my technique(or complete lack of), I'm just using the bells as a way to mix my training up while maintaining some basic strength levels. Also, I love just picking up the couple of 32s and walking with them; loaded carries up and down the steps at the side of my house. Simple stuff like that, along with getting out hiking with the mutts, is my bread and butter now...and I've never felt better. Do you train with Rannoch? I used to follow his Simple Strength blog a while back and his references to mindfulness got me into that stuff as well. Seems a good guy

He makes sense...check out his 100 Rep Challenge and fire him some suggestions for 100 reps of your choice...he'll be glad to hear from you... I know Steve has been to Spain with the IKFF several times...check the website out for contacts over there...if you ever get the chance to train or qualify with Steve grasp the chance...let's just say it's character building... Born Hunter 17,763
There was a documentary on Horizon a few months ago now on the intemittent fasting diet, in depth scientific study. I found it interesting and very logical. Ignoring the fact it's quite a natural diet, fasting and feasting, it's just a smart way of calorie counting effectively. 5 days you can eat as much as you want, whatever you want; 2 days you are limited to 600 cals. Now, the studys have shown that on the feasting days the majority of test subjects only ate about 10% more than normal, which based on 5 days feasting 2 days fasting you have cut your weekly calorie intake by an entire days calories! The science is proven! There were also other less well defined benefits noted. Personally, I don't fancy it. I feel physically weak and dizzy if I go 4-5 hours without a good meal and I like to train how I want and eat what I want without nutrient/calorie counting. But for those wanting to drop pounds, it does work, it's just a clever way of reducing your calorie intake.

Simple Stength Training In Edinburgh - Jan 2010 Yeah mate, there's a guy in Barcelona I've been in contact with regarding a Cotter workshop and I'm hoping to get up there at some point. Did you go to the Mahler course I think Rannoch put on in Edinburgh? Also you had LeCorre as well? I find a lot of these guys inspirational, especially when I get bored with the barbell work and need a fresh challenge. Currently just re-started gymnastic stuff (for the nth time, but I'll stick with it this time, honest ) As for the fasting, once I cut all crap out (and I'm talking all cereals, breads, grains, trans fats and seed oils) and concentrated on eating solid, nutritionally dense food (organs, meats, fish, veg, fruit, tubers and dairy products) I found my appetite changed and I effortlessly started fasting. I was formerly one of these guys who'd shake if I went 3 hours without tucker but just last week I went 36 hours without anything but wáter and black coffee. Breaking all my strength and conditioning records as well coming up to 41 so it hasn't affected my performance either

I think Steve Cotter is back in Edinburgh this summer... Trained outside this morning,,,we don't get too many chances to do that with the Scottish weather but from now on I will train outside every opportunity I get...I love training n the fresh air...that won't be a novelty for you though eh? Gitano 17
BORDERSCOT, Mahler's even worse than that I think...he's a vegan but, like you say, a tidy chap from what I've seen of him. Strong b*stard, too! Yep, I train outside all the time; even through most of the winter Got a rope tied to a tree where I walk the mutts in the morning and do some climbs, calisthenics etc and then give them a six miler by the mountain bike in the evening. Good place to live for looking after yourself here, although everybody else prefers the machines of the gym (luckily for me, I've always got the mountains and lakes to myself outside of hunting season )
THE STIFFMEISTER 15,840
Kettlebells are a bit of a fad, They are good for HIIT and to follow a regime like the 300 book for a start of year clense but will never give you the cardio running does or the muscle compound exercises will do.....Borderscot , You dont live too far from me, why dont you train with your kettlebells, Ill do my thing and well enter an event together to compare results???? Gitano 17
What I like about kettlebells personally is quite often I only have, say,10 minutes spare and I can get an awesome workout in, whereas it'd take me that amount of time loading and unloading barbells and more often than not I'd do nowt. This probably happens, on average, 2 or 3 times a week and over the course of a year, that's probably well over a hundred mini-workouts that wouldn't have got done if a kb hadn't been lying out in the front garden. Dumbbells don't lend themselves to high rep clean and overhead work, at least with me and my injuries, so the kb's are an awesome tool for me. Having said that, when I have more time I'll be deadlifting and doing other barbell work again. Mixing everything up is what keeps this old timer ticking over This one sounds painful Edited May 3, 2013 by Gitano
