What A Night!

Recommended Posts

Wednesday night I went to a new permission I have as the farmer said he had a well established flock of ferals in and around his farm buildings, so I charged the gun and gave it a bash, pocket full of magazines and I was in the landrover on my way.

When I arrived the yard looked deserted but for the ferals I crept slowly through the yard with the gun loaded and my mono pod stick set high ready for a shot to present on one of the cattle shed roofs.

Sure enough I turned a corner and there one stood on one of the roofs well within zeroed range at about 35yrds I was just about to pull the trigger when the farmers brother who also farms the land walked straight through the yard carrying two buckets of milk for the calfs, so I lowered my gun quick sharp and decocked it.

Anyway as we are talking the feral is still sat there, so he looked at me as if to say well go on then, so I asked "shall I take that one" he says "yes if you want" so no pressure I raised the gun on my mono stick placed the crosshairs on its shoulder and fed the pellet into its shoulder with a puff of feathers it rolled down into the gutter, he says " thats quiet" so I said I was wondering is it ok to shoot in the cattle sheds as you can see there is no fuss or noise he said "aye get em shot the mucky things" and he left me to it.

I shot in every cattle shed creeping through small gaps in the shed just taking them off the beams, emtying mags like there was no tomorow :D

In the end I sat on a trailor as I had a sweat on with all the adrenalin and I had 15mins, when a massive rat hops out into the yard eating some spilt grain so I put a pellet straight though its head and the pellet flicked up behind it, as it bounced around with the nerves.

Anyhow my freshly rebuilt little Fx2000 carbine didnt miss a beat or a bird all night performed flawlessly and probably accounted for over 40 ferals I wont get another day with the airgun like that for a long time, I enjoyed it more than a lot of the big bags Ive had of late with the shotgun.

I had set the gun at 11.8 with aa field the night before and It didnt half do the job, I nearly took the hw100tk but its .177 and Im glad I didnt as those ferals are easy to penetrate especially when head shot, I head shot the majority in the barns and when I picked em the .22 aa field hadnt half splatted them there was hardly any head left of some,.

Ill give it a week or so and go for round 2.

Its funny though as they are two of the weirdest farmers I ever come across they just dont speak unless you force em to.

When I first drove up to the farm its an old stately manor house with the farm and a few cottages its steeped in history, but I knocked on the doors of the cottages first and the neighbours all said the same that thay were very odd.

But the night I shot the ferals the brother told me he had just drilled two fields up the road and they were getting hammered with crows so I said I would go up the day after.

So I goes up gets set out and they both appear both brothers in their tractors and before I can get packed up they fly down the field and straight over my decoys with the roller.

I ended up packing up altogether and said I would come back tomorrow.

So I went back yesterday and sets up and was having a brilliant morning and he comes on with the rake and does my decoys again, plus the 40 odd crows I had shot for them.

Im not complaining though as they have given me permission when others told me that there was no chance of that, but Ive got all their neighboring land so maybe they have asked about me.

Yep 40 pigeons is a good number, Engraver, Its best to find out just what the plan is for the day as far as work on the farm goes, so you can avoid another situation like that, very odd behaviour on the farmers parts i must say, maybe it was a one time deal in the sheds and they are sending you a message in thier strange way ? Either way i would have to talk to them about it.

Wonder if they look at this forum...

I did go and speak to them the morning I set up they said it was ok to go on as they were grass seeding another field near a quarry, then they arrived 1/2hour later to rake and roll the field I was set up on then they did the same the day after when I had told them I would come back tomorow lol.

I doubt they come on here bud they dont even have mobile phones its like they are living in the 1940s.

I asked for their house phone number and they said they didnt do phones,

when they said they had a problem they were not kidding with the ferals, its a big farm with 40 yrd long cattle sheds so even after my few trips there are still ferals all over the place, to be honest when I said 40 I was being conservative I had shot my gun down to 100bar and it will do 90ish shots and I dont recall missing any at all, like i said it was one of those days to remember espacialy with an airgun.

I doubt it was a once only deal as Ive been shooting there a few weeks on some other drillings of theres and they seemed pleased at the number of crows I had shot, Ive also got the land either side of there farm so if that was the deal I wish they would tell me as Ive got plenty to go at, just not ferals.

Sounds like a good farm, even though they are strange. maybe its best not to let them know what you are doing, pick your spot, few deeks, natural hide not a net or pull up, use stealth to hide from the crazies ! you might have a day of it that way.

Blimey, its like we are talking about the hills have eyes or something lol  Good luck mate.
