paulk73 151
right here goes. bought a new hw 100, last may. started using h&n ftt pellets, and they where bang on. one hole groups to 40 yrds. then the gun started playing up. power was up and down by up to a ft and a half between shots, and groups opened right up. sent it back to hull to get looked at, and was fitted with a new firing valve. and had a service. it came back with a test certificate, the power problem was sorted out, but the rifle didn't seem to like the pellets anymore. I've been through loads of brands trying to find 1 that performed as well as ftts. but Im now really struggling. Im currently using the air arms pellets, and they are ok out to 25 yrds, but they start opening up after that. Im at my wits end, and Im limited to only shooting rats at close range, as i don't want to wound anything. but Im a bit p&ssed off with having a £700 + rifle that can only produce groups equal to a sub £100 rifle. would you recommend a good clean of the barrel, then start the releading process again??? i didn't want to interfere with the internals of the barrel if it could be helped. some advice pls. kruby01 114
why dont you try ordering a pellet sample pack off ebay a mix of say 20 of about 10 different pellets and give them a shot? Quote Link to post
Guest scramble
take off your moderator and look for witness marks where the pellets may be striking, if nothing there then clean out the barrel, re-lead and shoot again. try a few different brands cleaning and re-leading for each. if that doesn't work then i'd contact HC again. if it was Pre AT i'd of advised taking it apart and looking at the grease and seals etc. Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
Try Crosman Premier Ultra Magnums, I use them in my HW 100 kt .22.... 14 shot grouping at 25 metres including the first 2 set up shots! Edited April 26, 2013 by secretagentmole Quote Link to post
paulk73 151
what size pellet head moley ??? i will see if i can source some. cheers pal. Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
Just 5.5s, if you were local to me I would let you have a few to test! They are just plain Crosman Premier Ultra Magnums in .22, American made so good quality! I don't think they do the Crosman pellets in different calibre widths, ie they are just .22, no 5.5, 5.51 etc! Elliott 436
Get on the phone to HC and get it sent back or ask for a replacement from your RFD. Not normal for a HW100 Quote Link to post
smecky 52
Have you tried cleaning the barrel with a Napier pull through. Might just need a good clean. Quote Link to post
villaman 9,983
H I Try cleaning the barrel first . H&N are terrible in mine but rws superfields are good or even better falcon accuracy plus 625fps and fly very flat Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Sounds like your barrel is loose, get your dealer to look at the grub screws Quote Link to post
paulk73 151
I've just had a look and set up a couple of A4 sheets of paper after putting a couple of felt cleaning pellets through. first i tried superfield, and they where grouping at about an inch and a half with 5 shots. then i tried superdome and they wernt too bad. the groups tightened up quite well. then i tried some fx pellets. again, not too bad, but not doin what the ftts where doin. i then put another couple of wads through and tried the air arms. these where the best so far. so i put five mags through, and set about some minor adjustments. i managed to get it driving pellet on pellet at 25 mtrs. which is way better than i have been able to manage recently. my mate has booked us some time on the indoor 50 mtrs range tomorrow morning because he knew i was struggling(nice lad really, just hides it well). so i will let you know how i get on with the longer ranges tomorrow. my confidence in the rifle is returning. and for me its a big thing. i was not far off letting the rifle go tbh. glad i didn't now. will keep you posted on tomorrows outcome. thanks for all the replies guys. paulk73 151
after firing a few felt wad pellets through the 100 then a few more, decided to put few air arms field through to lead it up again before getting down on the range. after about 100 pellets on Friday night, i went off to the range on sat morn. after a few more pellets the groups started tightening up on the 25 mtrs range, and was soon knocking 5 pellets through a hole just bigger than a pellet size. it was then know to the 50 mtrs range for a look at the capability at greater distances, but time caught up with us before we got chance to go right through the process of checking point if impact in increments right out to that distance. on arriving home. i settled down to have a brew, when in dropped 2 woodies in to the trees at the far end of the garden. we are absolutely plagued with them at the moment if they are not in the trees at the back, they are in the trees at the front sh#tting all over the car and van. so i took the rifle from the bag loaded a full mag, and inched the door open. the first one was at 25 mtrs. and was sat with the main trunk of the tree directly behind it, giving a solid back stop. i got settled in the kneeling position, then gently squeezed off the pellet. the bird dropped to the ground, flapped a couple of times, then lay still. i looked for the other bird, but couldn't see it. but i knew it was still there somewhere because i never heard the frantic clapping of wings that normally acompanies a woodie making good its escape. i sat for a min or 2 before spotting movement. this bird was 30 yrds out but was bobbing about on the branch in the wind. he hopped on to another branch closer to the the trunk, giving me a more stable target and a back stop. i took the shot from the kneeling position again, using the door frame for support. down it came with s thud. 2 woodies , both cleanly head shot. and confidence in 100 rapidly returning. 1 Quote Link to post
