FIRST NIGHT BACK.........

Recommended Posts

AT 4pm i got the call, "when you coming down to us again" Was the first words i heard, After a little chat i decided to take a trip down to my mates farm

which i cleared a few foxes from about march time this year. 16 to be exact, Thinking it would be a while since he seen any more.....

So as dusk fell i got my kit sorted and headed down the road to his farm.

Greeted by a brew and some nibbles we headed out. Driver, lamper, and myself. Saying to the boys if one's close tonight i'll give ye a crack at it... The moon was bright in the sky but we thought what the hell... not 30 seconds from the lads house the window got a tap. Christ i said brakes slamed out we got, at about 300 yards a fox and cubs playing in the distance.. it was an unsafe shot so we watched for a while and headed on. To cut a long story short we saw 4 that were all to far away or hard to get in at so we decided to head for home,

With the lads saying c**ts all to far away for us. lamping back at the lads farm they decided to take a drive up to the back field with a mountain running along it, to check the sheep before hitting the bed... lamping on the way up.......CHRIST i shouted as the window nearly came in on top of us with a thump.

And sure enough charlie well back at about 540 yards... So on the caller went with no lamp for about 30 seconds i told Tom to hit the light, NOTHING Charlie must have taken off like a rocket...... :censored: just as we were for going to 3 o'clock from us there he was stood in the long grass,

Between a large patch of heather, i ranged him at 379 yards, switching of the lamp i turned the caller on and again after about 30 seconds hit the lamp,

Not a move from him thinking it was maybe because he could see and smell us with the moon.

Ranged again still 379 yards. consulted the drop tables i made, 20 clicks, dialled in and lamp on..... still standind slighty side on ready to walk.

BANG asking the lads did they see him.....NO Was the reply :censored:

And home i headed. Got a call the next day greeted by the words JAMMY B.........D They took a look at the heather clump only to find the bullet hit the fox, bullet went down the spine spliting him in half i've been told...........AFTER a slagging that night because i missed..... :clapper: a happy ending after all. 2ND longest shot to date.... :D

The rifle is a tikka m595 s/s, the scope i use is a leupold long range tactical 6.5x20x50 with M1 turrets mil.dot

the bullet doing the task for now is the 70 grain sierra blitzking. excellent bullet.

The longest kill to date is 420yrds witnessed by the two guys i shoot for.

:icon_eek: Four Hundred Yard Mark?!? That is Just In F*cking Credible!!!

Dean O' was up here yesterday with his Range Finder. We were looking at things at those sorts of ranges. F*ck me; I couldn't even see a fox at that sort of distance, let alone make out where to fire to! (Obviously, with a .22 Hornet it'd simply never cross my mind to try either!) What sort of calibre did ye use there? .243? Good god, it'd take me a good twenty minutes or more to even walk that far across these fields! And 400 adds up to a good four of our fields too. 300 yards and I need to check with my binoculars!

Much more of that sort of thing and they'll want ye in the army ~ as a Sniper! :clapper:

Thanks for the input dogrun, why didn't i check, simple i've been shooting a rifle for about 13 years now, i heard a thud of the bullet strike that could only indicate a soil hit or full impact, listen to your shot you'll hear it. We would have had a river to cross, plus search the long grass, plus driving around to the site might have lost the area in particular.

i'm more carefull than most people i know when shooting. plus with the .243 i never aim for a head shot at those distances. heart and lung. if it's hit within 2" of the aim point it's dead. simple as.

never did a fox run yet, that i hit...... As for respect for quarry......Always. I don't want to come across as buming here just years of practise.

Believe me, when i started out i wasn't a great shot, my friends will vouch for that............ :icon_redface:

i just wanted to learn as i got better with time. if i didn't know i would ask, or read up on my question.

thanks D.S. but i'm far from a sniper

i joined this forum to share what i know and learn what i don't......... GOOD HUNTING ALL...

:bye:

Hi Digger, firstly the .17hmr is not recommended for foxes but shot placement will kill at that range but it's touch and go, secondly i would personally stay away from the nightforce as they are overpriced, and not optically great in low light, schidmt and bender or leupold would be my first choice.

If it's only for foxes the 223 is great and shots to 400 yards with a good set up are pos.

but IMHO a .243 is the dog's bollock's. i've been shotin one for years, great allrounder. you couldn't go wrong with both cal's.

it's just a matter of what you personally want togetout of your gun.

one to think out.......... :hmm:

good luck.

Digger,

i'd go for the 243 then mate. recommend the sako 85, tikka m595,or remmy model 700, the m595 is better built than the newer t3.

i've shot big red's no problem with it, and foxe's to 420 yards, also suggest a good scope when you go for a good rifle. t8 excellent. but there's a newmod called the A-tec meant tobe the mutt's nuts. best of luck let me know what you get. :gunsmilie:
