mistwalker 0
The bikes a great way of getting the dogs fit. I agree with whats been said already, start with a long-ish lead, then once the dog gets used to it, you can do away with it mostly. There's a disused railway track near me which has just been tarmac'd this year, it's a lot safer than getting them onto wee country roads with the feckin boyracers tearing around. Quote Link to post
highlander 0
I use the bike through the summer just to keep the dog ticking over then when the winter comes if Im not running him hard I go up the forestry track and run him behind the van for a few miles. Keeps them in good nick. Regards highlander. Quote Link to post
breeze 1,336
Been taking my young bitch with me on the bike 2/3 time's a week. Alway's get on the canal tow path that is just a couple of minute's down the road from my house. No need for lead's and I can go for mile's if I wanted to. Good way of bringing the fitness back up along with a bit of galloping Quote Link to post
springfield 20
2-3 times a week I roughly go about 2-3miles and they get 15 mins gallopping around a field.Just take it slow and steady. Its good for building a dogs muscles,But you need to give them abit of free running other wise they get to muscle bound and can look abit one paced. skycat 6,174
Bikes are great: the only time mine are on a lead is when I go through the village before hitting the foot paths and open land. I did have a couple of dogs that really hated it and wouldn't trot beside the bike at all: funnily enough the dogs that love it the best all have Saluki in them: used to do 14 miles roads and cross country with a couple of them. My dogs that have had Collie in them didn't like it: they would sooner mouch around and sniff then gallop to catch up: the coursing dogs like it the best and canter formiles at a steady pace along the verge beside the bike. Simoman 110
I've been thinking about doing this again and this post has made me decide to get the bike out the garage this weekend and fix the punctures and brakes. I used to do 4/5 miles every night with the terrier alongside, I used to cycle 10 plus miles every night years ago but last time I got the bike out I collapsed retching after a mile so i'll take it slow Quote Link to post

Gallop to catch up!? my deerhound (and my old saluki x when she was alive and working) make an arse of me - images of a skinny streaking running past with a look of "27 gears?! I've only got four legs and you can't keep up ya fat lump!" in their eyes! lol Quote Link to post
Bush Rummager 4,767
bikes, great way to keep dogs fit, especially in summer, nice and early before the day hots up. WARNING! dont use short, or regular, leads. I tried this once, ended up with half my face black and blue! Never seen our Doris laugh so much when i got home, especially when i asked her to pull the thorns out of my head !! Let em run free now.. Quote Link to post
harddigging 42
on my bike i fitted a pair of handle bars to the seat stem and teather the dogs to them it leaves both your hand free and on the brakes plus gives a bit off distance between dogs and peddles. i also fitted a wheel disk on the back wheel cause my old bull cross hated the bike i turned out the spinning spokes were spooking her, she ran fine once the disk was fitted like blinckers on a horse i suppose Quote Link to post
