smudgersmith 2
I seem to be having a real problem this season with my Ferrets, I suppose that over the proceeding years I have been very lucky with no major problems. Once again I have a new drama, yesterday I had to separate two of my 4-year-old jills, both are sisters and been together since they were born. They have worked side-by-side and lived together happily, however yesterday they had one almighty set-too resulting in one of my Jill’s being savaged and left traumatised I think that it was only the use of a garden hose to separate them that stopped her from being killed. I took out the injured Jill and put her in a cool corner of the shed and left her to own devises, within a few hours she was up and about if but subdued, I cleaned her wounds and put her in another court. The vicious Jill was still hissing and aggressive, her tail was like a chimney sweeps broom, she then attacked my hoblet inflicting a few nasty bites, in the end I had to remove her ( with a few bites to myself ) and put her in a rabbits hutch I use for ill & injured Ferts. This morning she was fecking too aggressive to even get out, so I left her with ample water. Question : Is it the heat ? The courts are covered so no direct sun light hits the court area. ANY POINTERS Quote Link to post
Kay 3,709
You may have just found the killer of the kits, it may be a mental problem, might pay you to get her to a vets t seee if she has some kind off brain problem as she has only recently started this behavoiur. Then again it could be hormones, i have had jills change overnight from soft animals to killing machines, Quote Link to post

gibby 0
If things dont improove in a week. Put her down. Frank. I agree with that its not worth the risk to your other ferrets or to yourself mate. Quote Link to post
richie 1
im having the same problem with two of my new jills...... when i first got them two months ago they were good as gold, got on with all my other ferrets and i would have no problem with handling / working them. all of a sudden theyve become more aggressive, i cant even handle one of them without it jumping, hissing and tyring to lock onto my fingers. i took her out last sunday to work and all she would do is attack the other workers underground. you would see the others dragging them selves out with her locked onto them. even tyring to pick the little f***** up took me 10 minutes, i had to resort to laying a cage trap. all my other ferrets have had the snip 1 jill and 3 hobs. the two nutters havent, do you think its cause of this that their off the head ? richie Quote Link to post
smudgersmith 2
Thanks, yep she could be the kit killer. Will give her a few weeks and see if she settles down, if not she's history. Off down the boozer for an ale or five. Quote Link to post
Guest little_lloyd
One of my jills goes on a killing spree every so often she gets so agressive i have to handle her with a gardening glove. Quote Link to post
Hob&Jill 258
I know what I would do..... Your never going to be able to fully trust it, do what you thinks right but if its the same in a week or 2 them I would pts. I just introduced 2 new ferrets to my lot, one ferret has bite marks around the neck, I think there just sorting out the highrachy (sp) so hopefully all will be fine. Quote Link to post
stubby 175
must be a motherhood thing, my 2 silver sisters, both as tame as could be both had litters, now the remaining kits are 8weeks, yet 1 of the mums still drags them around and has started nipping me whenever she gets the chance, dont trust her at all now, will prob use her this year on the ferreting team, but if she dont improve???? Malt 379
I'd say give her a week or so and see if there's any change then if not, then a one way trip to the vets, I'm sorry to say. Quote Link to post

martin 332
The first one sounds like it migt have something actually wrong with it,so,get it to the vets, and,if need be pts. The rest just sound like the hormones are up,and, the bite marks on the neck are from either being mated by the hob or dragged into the bedding by a jill that is all hormonal(you women should know). But,if you have a biter, and,I don't mean one that gives you the odd nip, then you should never use gloves as you do need to form a trust with the ferrets.Firstly you pick them up with the left hand so it cannot bite your left hand, and, you offer your index finger knuckle of your right hand to the ferrets mouth(rubbing it on their nose)and, when they bite you just force the knuckle into the mouth until they start to gag.You obviously don't do it so hard that you break the ferrets jaw, but, you just keep doing this to the ferret until it doesn't want to know. Now I know that you are going to get bitten, and,it will hurt, but it does work, and, how much do you like your ferrets, and, how much do you want them to stop biting. If people are uniformly using gloves to handle their ferrets then STOP doing it because you are causing trouble.Just handle your ferrets as much as you can(bare hands)and, they will be fine. Hob&Jill 258
Gloves dont work This one was odd, when I brung him home he was as gentle as a kitten, bounding around doing the war dance etc was fine for 2 days when he bit me, sounds stupid but its almost like he got a taste for human blood Was a diferent ferret after that. Gave it 2 weeks with NO changes so I put him to sleep. I still have his sister who is the friendliest ferret anyone could wish for. I dont have a clue what happend He was being fed raw too. PS, That cage thing in background isnt a ferret cage. Found it in a skip and for some reason thought it would be handy for something, just sitting at the back of the garden getting rusty now lol Edited August 5, 2007 by Hob&Jill Quote Link to post
