Fretwell 59 15
What do people about the ground that the dog runs on And the speed thay move at I know that the type of dog for the ground you work them over has a factor in it but if you run them on a foot ball pitch they can shift on this land they don't do as much Some off them are nearly as tall as him thay foot ball size to beach ball size these would obviously slow the dog but how much and would any body's dog catch rabbits on this ground depending on the length of the course Cheers matt Edited April 22, 2013 by Fretwell 59 Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
What, like how does the type of ground run on, affect the dogs performance, as in catch rate etc? 2 Quote Link to post

Neoleaver 55
Are you asking if rough ground/grass tussocks will slow a dog? then the answer is yes, proportional to the amount it slows the quarry Quote Link to post
Huan72 687
Thats the sort of ground that makes me nervous, like some of the old scrubland/woodland round here were the rabbits seek revenge with a well placed covered hole ............almost like there making pitfall traps I would wanna look around on ground like that before letting my dog run If that land is anything like similar land round here, i'ld be very mindfull of potential broken legs! Fretwell 59 15
But I would have thought that the rabbit had a advantage with running the big balls of grass and the average course is only 30 or 40 meters before there back safely in bed Quote Link to post

Hot Meat 3,109
Dog will start catching if you keep at it. Most dogs iv had adjusted well to a change in terrain but some can't. Iv hunted land like the pic an caught. Keep at it Quote Link to post
Neoleaver 55
But I would have thought that the rabbit had a advantage with running the big balls of grass and the average course is only 30 or 40 meters before there back safely in bed I'd say their always going to have a 'home field' advantage over the dog, knowing the land alot better. But when the rabbit's pushed and stressed the same obstacles that slow the dog can cause the rabbit to come a cropper, seen that time and time again....keep at it bud, the dog'll work out the ground, like someone else said tho, be worth havin a sweep for any 'hidden nasties' old sheet metal, etc. My old bitch Meg jumped down into a ditch and severed a blood vessel in her front paw on broken bottle......lots of blood, very difficult cut to get at up between the pads, lost a lot of blood, overnight at the vet. not good. Ideation 8,216
To be honest, looks like a lot of land we hunt, and generally rough places. Quote Link to post
