Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
well a .177 is just as accurate as a .22 the pellets just fly flatter so you dont need as much holdover when shooting at longer ranges. its safe to say a well placed shot to the brain will take vermin cleanly at 90+ yards with sub 12 ftlb air rifles. i personally have shot a crow in the head at 66 yards and it was dead before it hit the floor.. woodchip 2
My AA s410 .177 is zerod at 50m and I regularly shoot further than this there is a video on you tube of someone shooting 500 yards with a sub air rifle Quote Link to post
dadioles 68
There are two factors here. One is your ability to shoot accurately. The second is the power of your pellet. Take accuracy first. What is the maximum distance that you can shoot every pellet within a half inch circle, the size of a pound coin, the size of a rabbit brain!. That is your maximum range for shooting a rabbit. It is generally accepted that you need at least 5ftlbs of energy to humanely penetrate a rabbit skull and shoot it in the brain. For a 12ftlb air rifle that may equate to something like 75 yards. You need to calculate that by testing your pellet with a chrono. Have a practice on paper and see what your reliable accurate range is. I would not mind betting that if you are honest it may be no more than 45 yards. Try it. You are deluding yourself, or taking too much notice of others who for the sake of their own egos are deluding themselves, if you think it is appropriate to shoot rabbits at much greater range. 2 Quote Link to post
Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
its best to try get close and spook the rabbit, than to shoot it up the arse at yards because you went for the head and you werent that good at shooting,,,,, Quote Link to post
WoodsmanJim 160
My AA s410 .177 is zerod at 50m and I regularly shoot further than this there is a video on you tube of someone shooting 500 yards with a sub air rifle I don't doubt your shooting bud, but that second part sounds like the ultimate "pub fact" if ever I heard it! Did they actually hit what they were "aiming" for? was it live quarry? I sincerely hope not! If so, I call bullsh1t!! according to Chairgun my 11 ft/lb air rifle at the optimum angle will only throw a 16gr pellet 314 yards MAX!! And the chances of an "aimed" shot actually hitting anything intended at that distance is absolutely ZERO. 'The Twig' on the airgun gear show managed to hit a kill zone sized target at "only" 200 yards after about 20 attempts and only then after aiming off at fixed points on tree above his head and adjusting for where the pellets fell. His scope would have needed to be able to see through the action and barrel of his rifle (a prosport I believe) in order to have line of sight at the target. Shooting at live quarry that you can't even see is beyond irresponsible, and firmly into the realms of stupidity. If I'm wrong I'm prepared to be proved so, but I doubt it. Craig Fosse 286
I'm a realist, I have a .177 and my furthest shot I have taken is 42 yards, I shoot off a Bipod for every vermin I kill if not its in a standing or kneeling supported position, if I roost shoot I shoot with sticks, I'm an ok shot but nothing out the ordinary so I keep within my limits, if I walk round a corner and see a rabbit or one suddenly pops up, I stop ten try and get prone rather than try and shoot free hand Quote Link to post
Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
Woodsmanjim. That airgun gear show thing is a load of sh1t!! There must have been some camera trickery involved. that guy cant shoot for toffee... Quote Link to post

There must have been some camera trickery involved. that guy cant shoot for toffee... haha! your probably right. It was just an example I could think of off the top of my head. It does go to show how hard a 200 yard shot is if they had to use camera tricks though don't it! 500 yards - not a chance. The pellet would barely even go that far. Jim Quote Link to post
Skot Ruthless Teale 1,701
not long ago someone calculated how far my gun would go and it was 420 ish yards if i remember right. still nowhere near 500. heard of snypercat, apparently she did some vids out to either 100 or 200 .i can believe that.. but not 500. lol and the airgun gear show is a load of sh1t , they probably had some one off camera shooting a pcp from 30 yards away from his 'target' and just muted out the noise whilst editing lol Quote Link to post
