socks 32,253
Most of us on here I am sure will have seen the lurcher in battersy dogs home opening the cages of the other dogs ... Well I think I may have a dog out of its lines .... I have a wrought iron round handle type latch on the gate to my dog area and within a month the pup had learned to flip up the handle with her nose catch it in her mouth turn it and open the gate ... No problem I put a bolt on the outside problem solved ..... I was away in Wales on Sunday morning when i Get a frantic phone call off my missus asking how many ferrets should I have ??? ... I am in the middle of upgrading my ferret court so all the ferrets are in a three tier hutch ... The pup obviously decided she wanted to play with them and had opened the latches to each tier and released all the ferrets ..... To top it all off she has now sussed out how to open the double glazed door to my shed and how to open the internal door to the food prep area and has eaten 4 lbs of turkey necks I was defrosting .... I wish she was that clever when I want her to be ............. 16 Quote Link to post

Born Hunter 17,775
That's hellish smart to me! Feck me, how stupid are the dog's I'm used to? My lurcher is a sly bugger but no way has she figured out something as complex as a bolt for a gate............. If the terrier is laying somewhere nice where she wants to lay, she'll pick up the terrier's favourite ball and start playing with it, then as soon as the terrier leaps into action after the ball the lurcher swipes the spot where the terrier was laying!.......... Does that count? Quote Link to post

socks 32,253
You have a cracker there, does she stand out from all the other dogs you've known ? Yes and no she is very advanced in some things then still very puppyish in other ways ... She is a very inquisitive pup and I think that's why she works things out such as opening doors ... It only took her two sessions ferreting to realise if she can follow the ferrets then she will have a better chance of maybe getting a rabbit ......... Quote Link to post
