fireman 11,038
If there's no wildlife in the pond already then i'd say there's probebly not a lot of oxygen in it so the first thing i'd do to stock a pond is getting some plants in there to change this and with the plants come the first rungs of the food chain ladder with small crustations, snails etc then when there's food for the fish get the fish in there.Put fish in a bare pond and all your'll have soon is a bare pond full of dead fish .

rob190364 2,594
if the pond has been there for years and there's nothing in it then there will be a reason for that, maybe lack of oxygen, or it might be too small/shallow/clear for the fish to evade predators such as herons etc. As has been said though, there could very well be fish in it and you don't realise. I've just moved house and there's a knackered old pond in the garden that is no more than 1 meter deep because the lining has split. I was just about to break it up but ran a landing net through it just to double check there was nothing in it....three small koi carp, literally about 25 newts and loads of different types of insects, the pond is only about 2m x 1m!!! You would never have guessed in a million years it had life in it and yet it was teeming!
