Bushing Dog: Advice Wanted

Yeah my lads a bit uninterested most of the time but that's changing with age :-) he reckons the terrier is his so now he has to walk and work the dog to earn its keep. It working so far and I'm hoping the bond with that little dog is what will start him on the long road of the country side.

 

What you do sounds fab, wish there was something like that round here, for me as well as him lol

Do a 'forest schools' search for your area, there's quite few places that do em, usually different age groups/ days for the kids......good luck, sounds like you're on to summat givin him responsibility for the dog

Never met a young lad yet that wasnt fascinated by rabbiting, he'll click when he's ready.

Has caught a few rabbits and a good ratter too. He is very game and tenacious like a terrier but as a pet is completely soft like his spaniel dad. He also retrieves out shooting! My current terrier's a nutter,destroyed any rabbits he caught tried to steal whatever the lurcher caught,despite being great when using dummies doing obedience along side my lurcher etc.

 

then about a year ago he got attacked by another dog on a walk and became very aggressive to other dogs,so can't even be let off lead now and is just kept as a pet.

 

my last one was a pet jack russel and she worked fine,but i don't think i'll get another terrier for bushing.

ouldn't mind seeing some pics as well. I've got a seven and a half week old cocker here, from cracking bloodlines. . . . . and i've been entertaining the thought of sticking him over my hound x, in the far future.

You mean putting him to the Teckel/Beagle mate?....providing he shapes up to the job....could be interesting that, might start to see a busher x busher working type appear eventually in time....looks like there's a lot of interest in this type of work these days

Yer that'd be the plan. . . . it's a long long way off. The pup is my old mans dog, he's a spaniel man. I have confidence in his training ability and the dogs blood. . . . that he will make a cracker. Just depends if he would let me have a lining There is def a fair bit of interest in dedicated bushing dogs, and more folk breeding specific x's and mixs for the job. There are a couple of lads on here (who have posted on this thread) who really have it off to an art, both the working and the breeding!

 

On a side note - someone on here bred a litter of teckle x cockers . . .. a couple of years ago, they looked like nice pups. Don't suppose anyone knows anything about them now?

I have a cocker/jack Russell first cross, she's a fab bitch for bushing, ratting, marking holes everything u want in a dog to accompany your lurcher, she's only small, all black with a white chest, the others in the litter where white with black patches.

Each one in the litter has gone to work and all are doing well, just a lucky choice in parents as the prey drive in them is awesome! Mine resembles a terrier but has large ears, others are more spaniel like in appearance but work equally well.

It was a trial matting that worked out plan on having another litter soon.

Any pics mate....again, like the sound of that.

 

I know a couple of lads have already said it, but I reckon this Bushing lark might deserve its own sub-forum, seems to bring together lurcher, terrier and gundog folk. If the object is to keep these traditions going, bushing/mooching is an easy starting point for youngsters coming into the working dog world. just a thought...likesay others have said.

Not every dog can be taught to bush i dont agree with that. Ive seen purpose bred dogs fail at it and they have been given every opertunity to excel.
