I have a cocker/jack Russell first cross, she's a fab bitch for bushing, ratting, marking holes everything u want in a dog to accompany your lurcher, she's only small, all black with a white chest, the others in the litter where white with black patches.

Each one in the litter has gone to work and all are doing well, just a lucky choice in parents as the prey drive in them is awesome! Mine resembles a terrier but has large ears, others are more spaniel like in appearance but work equally well.

It was a trial matting that worked out plan on having another litter soon.

We have a patterdale/lakie type terrier. 100% round my son but they have been brought up together. I will add he is kennelled outside during the day and in on a night and is very hyper. He's still a young dog but isn't scared to enter the thickest cover if there's game there!! Can be a bit of a twat with strange dogs but other than that we love the little shit :-)

Thanks for the replies folks, think I'm leaning towards a terrier x beagle or spaniel (the missus went gooey eyed at the black and tan Teckel/Beagles on the Bushing thread....job done ) Some really good stuff there, learning a bit more with every post, keep it coming.

Iv been spending a bit of time with a mates pups he bred for bushing. Collie x terriers if I'm honest I never took him serious till I seen them work. They are real handy dogs and are still young. Talk about gutted as I was offered half of the liter haha

Here's the terrible 2 out for a walk about :-)

Hoping to see my lad out with the pup when it arrives, spent half my childhood ferreting wi me grandad and uncle but my lads nearly six now and never had a dog. Anyway, moving soon...new place has room for dogs, so I'll be making up for lost time, reckon a responsive quick learning type wi a bit of character will be perfect to teach him about training, patience using the right tone and body language...gonna be a lot of fun, might even put a few bunnies in the freezer.

You can't beat being out in the field with your kids teaching them about everything you love, hoping they will grow up to follow :-) my lad is just starting to show an interest (if I promise him we ain't walking to far lol) he even made a rabbit chain to help mum dispatch the rabbits. I had to explain to him how we do it humanely lol. I dread to think the conversations he has with his teachers hahaha

 

All the best finding a dog to suit although I think 90% is the upbringing and training of whatever dog you choose

Too right mate, my eldest lass Katie (9) brought her mate with her one day after school to 'help' me do a few jobs at the Forest Garden I look after. The kid was scared of everything, mud, thorns, nettles,insects,fungus....just never spent any time outdoors. We host 'forest schools' for the nursery across the railway, kids of around 4 come down with parents/nursery staff and do camp building, dens, hide and seek, a bit of teaching like 'this is oak' or 'these are ash' but mostly just lettin em run about getting shit up! Does em good, kids just dont play out anymore 'cottonwool kids syndrome' parents too worried to let em out of sight....sad. Kids are never to young to learn about life/death, where there food comes from....bollocks to the vegan tree hugger brigade running the school system. My kids will understand nature from a realistic perspective, and know that taking any life is a serious business and should only be done to fulfill real needs.....anyhow rant over....all the best!

Yeah my lads a bit uninterested most of the time but that's changing with age :-) he reckons the terrier is his so now he has to walk and work the dog to earn its keep. It working so far and I'm hoping the bond with that little dog is what will start him on the long road of the country side.

 

What you do sounds fab, wish there was something like that round here, for me as well as him lol
