low plains drifter 10,289
its the back legs look at the kangaroo, and dragsters the back wheels are always bigger than the front now if you could breed a running dog with long back legs and small wheels on the front could revolutionise the coursing game Too bad kangaroos are slow as shit. Only the ones that have been tied down by old rolf 3 Quote Link to post
thefensarefarbutistillgo 2,481
it is something todo with the length of the back and suppleness of the spine plus as with the hare the salukis heart is larger than other dogs its like a aero dynamic engineer has designed them to get maximum thrust with least air resistance so doesnt result in loss of power just one things hairy ears must cause drag or do they act as aero foils to get the front legs on the ground quicker? Baw might know Cheetahs have very flexible spines, in slow motion they can be seen arching them to an incredible extent. They can have all their feet off the ground at the same time during a sprint, as well as the back feet coming forward of the front feet ,so they get tremendous extension of stride. It would be interesting to see close-up slow motion courses that focus just on the hare. As others have said, a hare's heart is out of all proportion to its anatomy,"as big as a baby's fist ," as Plummer described it. A famous greyhound was autopsied, if thats the word [ I cant remember if it was Mick The Miller or Master McGrath,] he was found to have an abnormally large heart. Photos of saluki blooded dogs during courses often show them to have their ears out at almost right angles to their bodies, whether this aids them in turning I do not know.Ive noticed greyhounds often have their ears erect at the end of a race is it excitement or an aid to braking? Again I don't know. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can enlighten me? greyhounds flex there back a lot when running which gives them that extra length of stride and speed but also it uses up a lot more energy and oxygen using all those back muscles, but if you watch a saluki run they tend to keep there back flat which must save a lot of energy and contribute to there awesome staying power Quote Link to post
desertbred 5,490
I think ischemia is the desease that causes enlargement of the heart muscle this is usually if the amount of oxygen being supplied to the blood is not sufficient also week muscle structure of the heart can allow abnormal enlargement and usually results in heart failure. desertbred 5,490
a well conformed saluki will draw its rear legs right up where the knee will reach the front shoulder blades when in full flight thus the back will be arched just before the point of impact of the feet to the ground the back will become fully extended and immeadiatley on contact the legs again will be drawn forward allowing the suppleness of the spine to come into play Quote Link to post
blackgreyhound 206
for hares preban .i allways looked for a dog that is not overlong in the leg and that has more lenght than height .when viewed from the side not square shaped more oblong shaped which gives more speed due to body lenght and is running lower to the ground like the hare Quote Link to post

low plains drifter 10,289
I've heard it said that the hare can reach speeds of up to 45 mph,Know they are fast but that sounds a bit over the top to me,can a greyhound even reach that sort of speed ? Quote Link to post
