Been there, done that: I've tried to save runts, not any more: too much heartache. I've a theory on why a true runt, not just a smaller pup, is the runt: to me they seem premature when they're born, so maybe the egg didn't implant into the uterus until later than the other pups. The other theory is that there is only so much room in the uterus, so the runt got stuck between two more vigorous embryos and didn't develop as well as the rest. Who knows. Good luck with them.

Sorry to hear about that mate but isn't there a theory that the mother will do this type of thing on purpose to a pup(s) if they are weak etc.? I've heard of them eating a whole litter too

it would be mad to cull any of these pups as the mother is direct out of lucky the only 1 i know too all the others are either to old to have pups or have died of old age or coursing accidents got to keep the lucky legacy alive lucky was also the grand sire to the pups on fathers side stuff being bred now a days that say lucky bred are to diluted most are grandchildren of lucky put to any old shite not this litter got to be 1 out the 10 that make something special like old lucky was atb pp
