LaraCroft 863
I used to take the horse clippers to my DHx - several times over the summer, basically giving him a number 1 hairdo all over. He was much more comfortable, and didn't over heat on walks. Took a few weeks of practice getting him used to the feel of clippers on his body- same as it would a horse, but once he was used to it, I could clip him out in half an hour. I left legs as they were, for protection from thorns etc, and face, as wasn't needed - other than that he looked like a greyhound.

northern lad 2,292
Did neither of you find the dogs coat went soft/linty when it grows back in?my Borders coat went like cotton wool...before he had a proper waterproof jacket
LaraCroft 863
nope - 12 years of clipping each summer ( several times over the summer ) and the coat stayed the same each time. The only difference was the colour - unclipped he was brindle, clipped he was a light fawn colour, as the hair wasn't long enough to have the colours on it.

patterdalejoel 669
dont you lot pluck them out? arent they supposed to come back soft and fluffy like northern lad said? i just plucked my beddy x out, and it grows back nice and coarse each time, then just clip the neck up and face/beard etc with scissors to stop her looking like a lion. LaraCroft 863
I know what you mean patterdalejoel - but my lad was 34" TTS, so plucking him really wasn't an option - I'd have been there all summer. Clipping took 20 mins, another 15 with scissors to neaten the face/legs. I'm not saying it is right or wrong, but worked for me. I can't say I am a fan of plucking coats, or horses manes - it maybe just me, but I can't see it is comfortable or necessary. Not dissing those that do - just my opinion. As I said, I don't think there is a right or wrong - just what suits the dog and owner

It's called stripping, this is fine when your dog has a good top harsh coat and a soft undercoat, like the border..............borders have a different coat to lurchers even harsh coated lurchers, the lurcher in my pics has a soft linty coat already, she has never had a harsh coat therefore it would be cruel let alone impossible to strip her as she has no double coat, my borders are all hand stripped UNLESS they are old and not shown, i dont see the point in stripping them when it's not needed, and years of stripping has took it's toll on my hands, so i only strip dogs im showing, as for clipping them i have always found over the years a not so good border coat gets softer when clipped but a good coat comes back , stripping does keep the coat in far better condition, clipping is quick and easy but does take the goodness away, as i said before if i'm shopwing them they are stripped , when they get old clipped as i dont see the point, my rough haired lurchers are clipped as it doesnt make a difference to their coat
The one 8,479
I give the spaniel a number one with the clippers just as it warms up or else she gets balled up and gets grass seed stuck every where
