22 Hornet Vs .223

Recommended Posts

one of the reviews i read, which i have just been tring to find but cant, was by one of the writters in a shooting mag, he messed with the loads and didnt manage to find anything that shot well, the same centiment was in alot of reviews that i read. I am all up for experimenting with loads but if you dont find something your happy with then your confidence is never full.

Half the problem is that I like others i know, i turn into a tart when on the range and every thing has to be just so, in the field its another matter, if the beastie drops as expected i couldnt give a stuff if the bullet struck an inch high, left, low or right, but that attitude comes from having confidence in my loads which i have gained during zeroing on the range.

On paper if my shot hits and inch left or groups bigger than half inch, its an absolute tradergy, and as well all know its never down to the operator! its always down to the wind, the load, a dirty barrel or the butterfly effect.

What i am tring to say is i think i have talked myself out of this particular calibre, because i am a fusy tart!

Hi mate , i have all three .22lr .22k hornet and .223. If the time ever came to own 1 rifle it would be the hornet--- sweet underated round LD

Whilst I applaud a sensible approach to firearms, as you obviously have, mate if its a safe shot for a .22hornet it Is a safe shot for a .223, or a 505 Gibbs for that matter, in the real world you wont

Nope, all changed in the Deer Act Amendment 2007....keep up!   Edit Applies to England and Wales, Scotland has their own version and I'm not sure about NI.

That post was amusing

My understanding is that due to the shape of the brass, headspace can become inaccurate. Or at least that was my understanding :hmm: However, as i'm due to own a .22 Hornet shortly i have read oodles of reviews, and it seems that to get sub 1" moa you need to reload, and in some cases crimp the case. So be it! I like reloading, so it's not an issue. And bar use of my time, the .22 Hornet comes out at least the same price as the hmr. Only, it's more versatile with regard to the load needed/wanted. Less suseptible to wind, and reasonably flat with a light fast load. Thats my conclusion anyhow

It is very flat with the light fast loads, up to 150 ish then the heavier loads start to shine, I settled on the 45gn Sierra, it retained its energy longer and was flatter past 150 than the 35gn vmax, yes crimping is a must, and also flaring the case neck, if you do both of these operations you will have cloverleaf groups, trust me.

Sounds like i've made the right decision to get one...

I spoke with Pete Starly the other day, (owner/co owner of Midway UK) about the .22 Hornet. He said it was a very underated round and agreed that it's very versatile. As i'm suspicious of everything/everyone, i thought it was a sales pitch, but he didn't have any in stock anyhow

I need to get my variation in today, rather than spending too much time just talking about the round....

My next job is finding a rifle.... I've seen a few used here and there, and they were a tad battered. Which in my mind also indicates how the mechanical side of it has been looked after as well.....

I'm thinging of just playing it safe and having another CZ 527 American. However, the stocks are crap in relation to the level my eye is in relation to the scope. So much so i bought a Richards Micro stock for my CZ 527 .204.....

I really like the Savage 25 Lightweight Varminter but don't know much about them. Anybody got one???

Also, i like the Howa 1500, but again, don't know much about them. However, i have read alot of glowing opinions :hmm:

Medway uk never have anything in stock!!! every time i have used them the gear comes straight from the states.

I've been lucky to be fair Rimmer. Although i did have to wait quite a while for something last year and was getting p****d off so i gave them a call. That left me feeling worse as the bloke on the end of the phone was totally uninterested..... :censored:

From what i've been told, (i may be wrong) Pete doesn't actually run the company, or "man the phones". But his personality is such that i don't think you'd get much change out of him either! He's what you would call an "aquired taste" Recently i was in his shop. My god is it an Alladins cave!! :icon_eek: I heard a posh customer ask him if he prefered to be called Pete or Peter. His reply was, "Please yu-self! Call me C*** if you like! The stuttering and stammering coming from Mr Posh left me in stitches!!

Thats the one. It looks like a converted and enlarged double garage with a 1st floor. Although that may be an office??

Yes Jam1e the Howas are superb rifles but they don't do a .22 hornet, a 527 is the best choice, I take your point about the stocks, mine was the same but cured the problem with a comb raiser, the other option is an old Bsa, very good quality, a pal of mine has a 1950s one and it is a real tack driver, hornets don't pump enough powder down the barrel to burn them out so finding one with a good bore will not be a problem providing it has not been abused, if you did fancy an old one just make sure it is .224 bore size and not .223, although it tends to be the older American models that have this little quirk, but if I was having another one I would go for a 527 again, with careful handloading they are capable of superb accuracy.

I use the ruger 77/22 in hornet calibre, never missed a beat, and more accurate than I can shoot  also has a 1 :14 twist barrel so can use 50 grain bullets, and because they use a rotary mag rounds can be loaded longer --mine are 1.8" and still well off the lands--Have fun.
