Best Site For Run / Kennel

Hello Folks,

Sorry if this has been adressed before, but here goes,

 

I am just about to lay a cement slab and potentially build a block work kennel or a divided up 8' x 6' shed in preperation for getting myself my 1st Springer.

We are lucky in the fact we have quite a bit of space to work with, and My query is where am I best to site the run etc?

 

I had an old guy at the house recently who advised I should have it somewhere out the front, where the dog could see what was going on through the day. Would this be a 'must'?

 

Someone else has advised me it should be 'South' facing....again, is this critical?

 

My preferred place is actually neither of the above, and My mate has a springer which couldn't be housed more differently if you tried, and it seems ok.

 

Any thoughts??

i would say if you building block kennel use galvanised pannels for the run you can get them from ebay

That was to be the plan. I know there was a post on here about a dodgy supplier, so plan was to confirm who they were, and avoid em!

 

Any recommendations greatfully received tho.

Try Ross robertson at westro animal supplies in Brechin (Angus Scotland) he was the cheapest I could find and he is a mate so I can personally garuntee he is a good lad and not going to rip you off. Another mater just put up a wooden kennel block and he used plastic coated metal Sections and I have to say they look quite smart and were a lot cheaper I might consider them next time I need some panels.

Well i kennel mine out the way really i dont want the b*****ds barking at everything passing the house, i dont want people seeing they are there as they will go missing(Somebody tried 5 years ago), and they are out of the sun for the hot part of the day (Sometimes it is sunny in Britain honest!).

 

We are lucky in that we have a fair bit of space so i also built an indoor kennel in my big garage which is attached to the house. it houses 4 dogs all together has a sink food prep area heating and a fridge for their meat. The missus works from home so they dont mess in there but if we are out all day they are put outside into the block

The ones I got from Ross were galvanised but he could probably source the plastic coated panels. But if not I could find out we're my other friend got his.

Galvanised is cool with me!

No more maintenance required.

Past experience with powder coated stuff would suggest it would all be lying off within a few years resulting in needing to be painted regularly.

 

I'd rather pay more now, and have less hastle.

adam g brown glasgow. supply plastisol sheets. they come in various sizes and thickness. if i was you i would try and source the solid plastic sheets that are made from reclaimed plastic. we are useing them more and more on agricultural doors ect very hard wearing and easy to fix onto wood or or metal frames. no rust or rot. and power washable. try agricultural suppliers. google. a block built run is better for security. and i would want it close to my house. so i can see and hear whats about them. your local blacksmith may also be worth a thought for your runs

I'm planning on asking him too, He's just 200 Yrds down the road. Given workload / Costs etc tho, I think some of the ones seen on-line may be cheaper.

you generally get what you pay for. you could spit through some of the cheeper ones.
