inan 841
Nice dogs clipper DAN you'd only ruin one trebleing them up lol I got to thinkin and if I had to run them sazukis on my game of choice I dont think I'd have a f****n truck big enough to carry all of the dogs I'd need to catch and kill that damn critter. I'm being 100% honest here too. Each to their own. Quote Link to post

Bosun11 537
So if we are all agreed that nowt beats a 'skinny' on daytime hares on the big land.. (?) And if we are all throwing up dogs an breeders long past, in the great Deerhound debate, is anyone taking up the mantle on this cross right now, is anyone putting enough effort into breeding this type above all other and, like the 'skinny' stuff, testing it to the max? Because although as has been said, you can get some piss poor specimens of each breed! The Saluki and it's crosses still has folk who strive for the best behind them... So, question is, has the Deerhound..?? Personally, i've never seen a genuine that I'd rate, never to say they don't exist BUT i've seen plenty with large amounts of Deerhound blood run, to convince me how good this blood can be.. My mate has one right now, the Deerhoundy lurcher she came off was top notch and so, though bastardised by other blood, is she! Seen plenty of others too over the years to convince me also.. All I know is that it's last champion was Bill with his Doxhope stuff, a bloke who at that time put all his efforts into bettering the Deerhound and the Deerhound cross. Folk breed 'em but are they ever through selective breeding, gonna make a real comeback...? Just a thought, to anyone who is thinking of goin for it... John Nuttall of Clithero always used a Deerhound dam to a Greyhound sire to breed his Lurchers, costly and awkward but to him an his partner Jimmy, this way always produced better dogs... Another one to think about, could it be said that the best lines of match dogs be those that have that very early blood of other crosses in the mix, blood though heavily saturated with Saluki, through best to best selective breeding, STILL carries that 'other' blood... AND maybe if someone was looking to make a real difference to today's Deerhound dogs would be better looking for the best Deerhound blooded Lurchers rather than pure bred's and F1 crosses to improve the type..? They may not be pure but who gives a feck as long as they are impressive in the field...?? Funny ain't it, but from a simple nostalgic perspective I always see the beau ideal lurcher to look like a Deerhound cross and, as I'm gonna go Lurcher to Lurcher forever after, I really hope that 'good' Deerhound blood plays a massive part..(see thred entitled 'Big Strong Bitches')!! Oh an just to jump on the bandwagon... Me in the 80's, on Altcar with a brindle dog (on my right) that was bred out of a Deerhound Greyhound to a Saluki Collie type thingy (on my left)...!! Guest edrd
Fantastic response Iam still not going to ever think of that Arab raghead type of a dog il wait on fans response on why they use staghounds and not the other i shure it make for a more interesting read nowing he tests his dogs on other quarry some of which some breads cannot handle atb Quote Link to post
Dan Edwards 1,134
Dan well you gave me the answer would your STAGHOUNDS ie deerhound x hybrids perform the same whith the other blood added lol Not sure what you are saying but if you added saluki or deerhound to my dogs the results would be pure shit. Neither of them breeds can even come close to comparing to the type we run on coyotes. Its not even up for debate. 1 Quote Link to post

Todays deerhounds are pure shit for what I do and so would be the sazukis. Give me a break bro. You cant be serious. Quote Link to post

blackgreyhound 206
the only deerhoundsi have seen lately look very weak and skinny .my friend had one in the 1970 era called bess she was very big and very powerfully made .nice wide back on her .i had a deerhoundxgreyhound mid 1990 it was 34 at the shoulder but very skinny for its height and very under powered.in the middle ages the deerhounds we see today would have been put in the bucket at birth .most are useless skinny underpowerd badly bred with low prey drive..if you look at pictures of the original bulldog it looks nothing like the pieces of crap they breed nowdays.the same is true about german shepherds a lot of them walk like they have got desperate dan on thier backs.lots of breeds have been ruined by crufts and oversoft townies .if years ago a border collie was bred and was not up to its job .it recieved piece of lead behind its ear.now days people are breeding out of rosette winners not workers.the deerhound could be restored to its original power and structure by adding mastiff or bull blood blood to beef it back up but the only problem is that it would not take long for the rosettes to bugger it up again.i remember going up to a man walking a underweight deerhound in 1980 at a county show i said do you work it? oh no its to precious.if the pioneers like doberman or von stephanitz were alive today they would not be happy at all.and lord orford would be very pissed off as well.breeding a good derhoundxgreyhound now would be very hard because most deerhounds have not got the required build power or stamina.which is why all i see dxg wise nowdays are skinny roughcoated toilet brushes.i have not seen a powerfully built straight dxg for over 35 years. Dan Edwards 1,134
your proberly right dan but Iam glad I owned such a dog and it was more the late 90s he done more than was asked as I say such a dog would only lend you in trouble in today's climate I always thought that staghounds were a make up of deerhound bull Airdale type blooded hounds I think they are prolly heavy in the deerhound and greyhound department. No matter what they are the good ones make it look easy and the bad ones are just that bad. Quote Link to post
blackgreyhound 206
edrd.i think you are correct that some excamples would throw back its like all ridgebacks dont have the ridge .i remember the deerhound greyhounds of my youth were tall heavy built and they had big heads .they looked like the big heavy built greyhounds you occasionally see .i do remember they all had bigger heads than the deerhound sire .thats why i like the look of bullxgrey they have the big heads on them.in lurchers i like big powerful dogs well muscled with large heads .as you say the deerhounds of today would not last two minutes in the yard with the original type.once people dont work dogs breed degradation soon sets in. You dont need to add mastiff and all that sillly shit. I can show you 1000s of pictures of dogs that dont need any wild and crazy schemes to "fix" them and they are damn sure deerhoundy enough lookin. 1 Quote Link to post
Dan Edwards 1,134
This gyp here dont need nothin added to her. At 27 inches and 75 pounds she will do alright for a running dog. And they dont get much more deerhoundy lookin. 4 Quote Link to post
