darbo 4,776
watched a bitch from b.nuttalls kennels back in the 80s she was a good bitch on large arable fields. watched a very consistant hare killer in the mid 80s onwards 3/4 grey 1/4 deer x 1/2 grey 1/2 gsd 1 Quote Link to post
BOLIO1 1,078
the problem is that some deerhoundxgreyhounds are badly bred and some salukixgreyhounds are badly bred .you cannot judge any cross by the bad excamples you can only judge by watching the best of any cross. the dog in any cross that has superiour speed with stamina is going to pick up the hare preban before the dog with lower speed especially if run in singles not pairs .all i can say is that those who say sxg are rubbish have not seen a good one and those who say dxg are rubbish have not seen a good one So true blackgreyhound.......I've never seen a good deerhound/greyhound but I've seen loads of good saluki / greyound mixtures.....maybe I've led a sheltered life. 2 Quote Link to post

Maximus Ferret 2,063
Which dog would you breed off. Neither of them on that performance but lure coursing is hardly a proper test for a dog. Many good ones won't chase a lure at all. 3 Quote Link to post

Bosun11 537
I'm not a devotee of either breed but to answer your original question BG, before the arrival of the desert dogs the big Deerhoundy mutts where about as good as you'd get for the hare job, back in the day blokes like John Nuttall of Clithero bred 'em for that very job. He ran 'em all over the country and his dogs where in demand as hare killers. A few hung on for a bit too into the 80's, some folk then still couldn't get their heads round those half starved lookin stayers and still championed the Deerhoundy dogs but lets face it, they just ain't in the same league as a good Saluki hybrid on daytime hares and simply lost out.... blackgreyhound 206
maximus ferret.the saluki has got some idea of the chase but the deerhound has not really got a clue.in different hands from a pup the deerhound would be more keen he was not really intrested in chaseing at all.this is what happens when people get hold of dogs which are not being used for the task they were bred for .breeding for looks instead of ability is the main cause of breeds of dog degradeing into parodys of whaht they should be .strict working standards is the only way to go for all dog breeds.breed from dogs with good working credentials not rosettes which are very hard to digest.as my old lurcher mate used to say at lurcher shows you cant eat rosettes Quote Link to post

blackgreyhound 206
edrd i must agree with you .we all have one dog which the others will not ever compare to at the time i did not realise how good spider was .i took it for granted that my next dog would be as good but i was sadly mistaken .most of them had the stamina none of them had his speed and none of them had his cleverness. inan 841
i have seen some really good dxg on hares preban.they are very fast strong and have great stamina .good ones are faster than sxg top end .they are bigger more powerful with good stamina and good ones are very fast ..so why are there not very many about now days ? Fast and reasonably agile ,they lacked the stamina of the saluki cross on big land, and so fell out of favour. 1 Quote Link to post
