AR177 588
I come under Cambridgeshire for licencing and the fao there said 22lr was not classed as a suitable rifle for fox in the sense that if you put fox down as a reason for owning a 22lr they will not allow it, however he also told me that if you happen to take a fox whilst out 'vermin shooting' that wouldn't be an issue as it would be unreasonable to carry 2 rifles round with you 1 for just in case a fox turns up. ATB Adam We are wondering into a whole different bag of dogs doings which has been debated many a time........... I have a shooting pal in another Police Region that will not consider rimfire for fox, yet EVERY rimfire and centrefire I own is legal for fox, so I go out shooting with him and he cannot go near the fox, yet I can stand next to him with my .22lr and shoot them perfectly legally, DAFT in the extreme! AR177 588
Dose seem stupid that there isnt a clear ruling on it as im sure many police forces have encountered the issue, just have to consider yourself lucky if your in an area that lets you use the cal for foxes Quote Link to post
stillair1 16
To the op I use a .223 1-12 twist with a T8 mod and 4-16x scope usually set between 6-10 mag, 40 or 50gn tipped ammo. The mod makes the rifle sweeter to shoot though you do feel the weight up front freehand. Quote Link to post
dadioles 68
I too am in Cambridgeshire and as AR177 says, you cannot put down fox as a reason for requiring rimfire but that is not the same thing as saying you cannot use rimfire against fox in any circumstances. Until a test case is brought that determines that a fox is NOT classed as vermin I do not see that anyone will ever be prosecuted for using rimfire against fox provided that the circumstances are reasonable and the dispatch humane. To Deker - is it the case that your pal has been told that he may not use his rimfire for fox, I wonder what his exact certificate wording is. Quote Link to post

We go back to the Vermin/Fox debate, the fact is they have refused to condition his rimfires for fox, but do condition his centrefires for fox. Not worth persuing this debate, it has been done many a time! Quote Link to post
