weasle 1,119
If day time lads had so much respect for the hare why did they prize a dog that was happy to run behind a hare,Until it made a mistake or what ever.As long as they could say 3/3.? I lamped a few when it was allowed,Some where so easy it felt wrong,Some where so good it made the dog look stupid(felt wrong),and some inbetween. If you where out for decent bags of rabbits they where better left alone. It wasn't always easy to tell what the eye shine was especially if it was sat close to a hedge. As some ones already said if you had a around type as opposed to a specialist, You where a team and it was up to you to tipp the balance for the dog at least often enough to keep the dog keen. mick hucknell 17
what about hare shoots,i dont lamp hares as i think from what ive seen there to easy to catch, but people slagging of fellow lurcher owners in my book is wrong, why do you lot be it daytimers or nighttime consentrate all your negative energy against the syndicates who will have a day out and shoot 200 to 300 hares and leave fellow contry sports entusisatics alone looks like to me its all about whos got the best dog be it day or night showing or racing, and no one is willing to take a competitive ness racing dog to the sport of lamping or a lamping dog to the fens are esp a fen dog to a lamp, so again if you want to slag hare butchery of look at the shoots as this seems a pointless topic just to cause agro. timmy k 590
I live by the Waterloo cup grounds and pre ban the hares were lamped that often they ran as well on the lamp as they did in the day, if I went somewhere that wasn't lamped you could run them easy but on the cup grounds they would use every ditch, hedge, tree and farm machinery to their advantage, pre ban all the surrounding fields had good hare numbers, now I believe due to shooting and also the fact the hares aren't getting imported or spread across the area by beaters, hares are scares. Never had hare dogs just dogs that could catch hares ( if that makes sense ) so it doesn't effect my hunting much but I do miss my 3 days off at the end of feb to watch the Waterloo cup.
