Lamped hare, daytime hare...difference?..f**k all apart from ones ran in daylight the other gets ran in the dark lol..if it gets caught its dying..same end result?.....back in the day of the late 80's

I find they taste the same as daytime hares.

ive ran hares on the lamp i think if there run regular you get some excellent sport ,i dont think its for failed daytime dogs ,yes they do make the odd mistakes but all lamped quarry does , they can

if they are lamped enough at night.....they don't run that much different than during the day.....once they are clued up.....back in eh day of course...:thumbs:

and how do they get clued up :hmm: relentless pusuit by inferior adversaries . but a good lamping dog (rabbiter) can slaughter good numbers , if the shite lampers havnt run her first  each to their own and all that . but it wasnt for me :bad:

most daytime lads were more like coservationists regards old hartly . never wiping a place out of numbers and tipping their hat to a strong winter hare . it was genuinely weaker , older animals that were knocked over . its called respect.

I'm sorry but I don't get this. Farmers haven't changed much have they?? If a farmer had a hare problem and you said "Oh I'm sorry but I don't have good daytime dogs, just lampers. They'd catch a hare on the lamp but I don't like lamping hares so I can't sort them, out for you", then surely to god your permission would be lost??

Am I missing something? Isn't this the reason that anti's have such a problem with certain field sports? By this I mean that some people are simply looking to test their dogs as opposed to providing a pest control service, feeding ourselves and our animals?

Don't get me wrong, I love watching dogs work and even more when they meet their match but the bottom line for me is that I provide a service for farmers and land owners close to me. The fact that I have a laugh in doing so and that I can put food on the table are just bonuses as far as I'm concerned.

I know guys who go lamping and have admitted to turning the lamp off if the dog gets too close to the quarry. To me, this is ridiculous. If the dog gets it's quarry it gets it fair and square. If it misses, the quarry was better on the day. End of.

Edited to add that in my opinion, of course it was easier to lamp hares rather than run them daytime but that is the same with all quarry that's lamped - that's why it's so effective!

Let me know if you disagree though because I like to see what drives others to get out there

no mate , unfortunately. as for pest control ts , its more pest management , always better than total extermination.

jf1970.if shotguns and rifels were ever totally banned the hare population would soon recover as i have said before any one can learn to shoot a shotgun any one can learn to set up a high powered rifle.on a hare shoot the kill rate is 65 percent which means shoot at 200 hares only 70 survive that is of course if you have not saturated the field with guns then none will escape .to me shotguns and rifels are not sporting tools they are murder tools.i like to see any animal to be given fair law no light blinding it no hypersonic bullet up its arse. natures law flesh against flesh fit man fit dog.not some unfit fat slob waiting for driven game.which he has paid thousands of pounds to blow to bits.anyone who says shooting hares is sporting is a liar.if i said right your fit whahts it to be a 12 bore fired at you both barells or a scoped up rifle .or another fit human chaseing you ? shotgun 65 percent. rifle certain death if set correctly.being chased very good odds of escapeing

Blackgreyhound you know feck all about guns or shooting by the looks of things.

I used to love to see a hare run in front of a good dog, and I love my beagling.

In an ideal world there would be a good population of hares spread across all of the country. Sadly, there isn't, and in those areas where there are lots of hares shoots can kill hundreds of hares year in, year out, with no noticeable effect on the population.

Most of the hare shoots I know of are carried out by the beaters etc at the end of the season after driven shooting has finished, and there are usually two reasons they are done, to reduce the population to prevent crop and tree damage, and to reduce the population to discourage poachers and low lifes who drive on crops.

From a beagling point of view, the best days out I've had have been where there aren't hundreds of hares to switch on all the time.

Oh, and let's not forget that there is an exemption to allow hunting when a hare shoot has been carried out and they think they may have wounded a hare ;)

Don't get me wrong here boys, in an ideal world hares would only be run by dogs or hounds. Sadly, we don't live in an ideal world and the fact that hare shooting is still legal allows us to at least get a bit of proper hunting in once in a while.

Each to his own I say. There is nothing to be gained from condemning another mans sport.
