paulus 26
Well if im being honest to myself.... getting another would mean 4 in the house...and all my runners within 3 years of each other... The whippets almost 2, lurcher 12 months and then a pup.... I use the whippet for ferreting, lurcher for lamping and my lab x bushes ( to a degree)... i would say they get their work and throughout the summer theyre out a lot....lure coursing etc....they get their exercise. But in no uncertain terms are they anything other than pets first, workers second. I have my dogs to enjoy them and let them enjoy themselves.... But i dont drink, go out etc.....apart from my son and wife, the dogs are my life... 2 in each hand to even it out Have you got enough work for 3 lurchers/ whippets ??? personaly I,ve 3 in the house and to be honest its too much, wife keeps nipping my head to get the kennel built, I tend to think though dogs that are kept in the house develope a much better bond with you not true mate, its the same b*llocks as bitches are more loyal than dogs I disagree mate, if the dogs in around your feet rather than out in a kennel I reckon the dog will get to understand you better if you like, wouldn,t make much difference say out lamping but out ferreting/ mooching I think it makes a difference, you can read the dog better and vice versa, you and the dog then work better as a team, imo carn`t agree mate loyal is loyal and a bond is a bond where it sleeps is where it sleeps I think it depends on the person. A good dog person will have the bond regardless of house/kennel, a person who isn't that good with dogs, and keeps them in a kennel, is making harder work for themselves.  Quote Link to post

Which is why im no getting one. Id have 10 dogs if i could.....as a dog 'person' theres always the temptation to get another...."what harm can it do".... But hand on heart, id only be getting one because i 'wanted' one... Very valid point about dogs retiring....at a year or so apart...both my dogs will be reaching golden oldies not too far apart...then i would need another dog and be overloaded.... I agree....dogs in the house for me Quote Link to post

Huan72 687
I have always kept my dogs in the house but to be honest they have been and are pets first, workers second. I think that sometimes we can get too hung up on following prescribed ways of doing things, either because theyve always been done that way or because of scientific and wildlife research. What works for you, works for you. For instance we had many years of Alpha dog this, Alpha dog that but it actually turns out that canines in the wild are a lot more flexible than that, reverting to a stricter order when the situation is new or "hairy"! My dogs are my friends, my family and I treat them as such, in fact those that know me well, know that I am closer to my dogs than I am to people, but yeah thats my issue My dog is next to me on the sofa, sleeps with me when I'm on my tod and likes to be around me when ever she can. For those that say dogs can not be like this and work, well i'm afraid your wrong as has been proved through history time and time again on the hunting field and on the battlefield. 5 Quote Link to post
