Mink advice

wondered if you could help

 

Just bought a an old mill house with approximately 1 mile of water course and bank, my section is completely untoutched, full of small trout, nesting ducks and plenty of water voles. A good few miles down stream there is a large res, where im told mink have been seen - so i would have thought at some point im gonna get em coming up.

 

Planninng ahead, whats the best prevention or cure when/if they come. Got a number of fen and cage traps for rats, plus terriers, shotgun, air rile etc. Is it a case of pre-baiting an area and waiting woth the gun? Looking for them with the dogs, or would I be best trapping? If its the last option would the fen or rat cage be used?

 

Any advice grateful as ive never had anything to do with mink previousley

if you're using fenn's mate it would need to be mk 6 cages baited with some trout/fish should pick up any patroling you're banks, good luck with them mate

Im living in it pal - needs a bit of work but is structualy sound, dream house really in a brilliant setting. The water course sold it for me to be honest. Just cleard a path a Quarter of the way down the bank,its pretty steep in some places, so doing a bit of engineering to make it walkable! Would get photos up if I new how

Its air rifle heaven!! Plenty of greys to get rid of at the moment, but ive already seen quite a few Water Voles, and wanna keep em

Neither has DS and he as been trapping them for ages now :whistling: But ask him, he is doing a load of research on the methods that don´t work with traps, cages, snares and there are not to many left now. He is bound to come up with a great way of caching them soon. :tongue2:

if you've got water voles about you need to be using cage traps, DEFRA would come down hard if you caught one of them in a mark 6, even if it was an accident, there are several on here who could help, I'll try to get some pics up if no-one else does.

Naah, Proper Job has the idea, mate. Fenn Double Entry Cages. John Dee Humane Traps, on the Bay, sell the genuine article.

 

Couple of those down'll see ye voles protected. Just hope ye have no f*cking badgers around there?!

No, not Gloucestershire

 

You better get craking with those imragents then and do your local wildlife a favour

 

Why try get all the lanowners along the river permission and offer your local minkhound pack a meet at yours will be a lot of fun But of course the mink has to be flushed to a gun

This is a double entry mink trap set on stones next to the bank, and right by a bridge so I don't have too get out to check, I drive by every day.

This one has a bodygrip in it, but can easily be done with single entry trap, just find a nice location, think of things from a mink point of view, they like to explore where they might find food, trees, ditches running into rivers, drainage pipes etc. I don't bait mine unless I definately know there are mink about, and then I just use cat food. I will however dip a bit of sheeps wool in somthing smelly, fish oil or somthing from a tackle shop that fishermen use to attract fish, tie it in the back of the trap where it will blow around and act as eye appeal should a mink look in. Place your traps where they can be checked easily, on a daily basis, that 's the law.

They suffer from an incredible 'curiosity' and have little or no bait shyness,.and this is generally their downfall...

 

Personally,.I prefer to use the Kania 2000 Trap,...its the DADDY...

Chalkwarren, cheers, I agree with you wholeheartedly, but not being as wealthy as you southern pesters, "whats the price to catch a rabbit, guv" , "loadsa money" comes the reply from down sarf, I have to make do with the poor mans version , the 116, which you sold me a dozen of at some bloody expensive price a few years back

I have a couple of Kanias, always 1st choice for squirrels in the attic.

Yes,..G.S Waters is The Master when it comes to Body grippers....

He taught me lots of things about trapping....

Personally,.I seldom use the Cony Bear type traps these days and instead,.I favor the Kania...

I understand your concerns regarding the cost of this unique tool..££££..

But,.there IS a valid reason....
