what is your views on show whippets

Recommended Posts

I know it's not exactly what we're discussing, but still worth mentioning.

"Not all well-bred horses are great horses

but most great horses arewell-bred"

I can't remember who said this, but it was in answer to the question "why would you spend a fortune on a well-bred horse, when a cheap one might be just as good.

I think it's quite relevant to this topic.

One good thing about the show bred whippets is the kc havnt spoilt them as yet, they are still the correct shape, size to run.

one from working parents would be better

do you know why working parents would be better. if you take 2 champion greyhounds it does not mean you get 8 champions

If you bred 2 SHOW Champion greyhounds together there is no way on earth you'd get 8 racing or coursing champions.

you couldnt give me a whippet there shite when compared to a lurcher, mark

WHY

its my oppinion, ive seen loads work and race and not had one jump out and think thats a good dog,if you want a whippet for rabbits what advantage as it over a small lurcher??????ive got a 19 inch 28llb merle lurcher here who out works most whippets shes got stamina she will take fox ,and catch rabbits all night and bush not many whippets do that and not many have stamina either so besides having a pretty dog at the end of a lead why else ahave a show whippet over a lurcher??????????mark

i think they are the best you can get for rabbits in the lamp ?

 so your saying a SHOW whippet is the best for lamped rabbits!. i dont know who told you that crap or if you made it up of the top of your head or maybe your saying it because you have a show whippet  you just carnt say that a show whippet is better on the lamp because you have one or a mate has one and it catches rabbits. i really dont know how you come to that conclusion. if a show bred whippet is the best for lamping surely every rabbiting bloke would have one and there would be no need for a strain of working whippets e.g sutty sam lines would be down the pon because show whippets are better! :icon_eek: imo you carnt make a comment like that until you have seen both work or owned both thats just my opinion all the best  WB

I'm afraid that statement is codswallop. The nature/nurture debate, you can't polish a turd or make a silk purse from a sows ear. You may get a few good 'uns but if you want a working dog, regardless of whether its for digging/coursing/lamping/herding/gundog work blah blah you don't go to a show kennel you go to someone who TESTS them......
