Here Is A&somersets Version Of Aolq Back From Renewal Today

Recommended Posts

Here is my cert back today from renewal with the ALQ added, but am I right in assuming that most people with this condition in place have 'Any other lawful quarry' and not 'Legal'? Do you think that this makes any difference as I am of the opinion that Lawful does not necessarily mean Legal especially in Law? I shall be e-mailing the FAD tomorrow to ask for a detailed explanation of the condition in writing as I feel it might be a bit ambiguous.....................any intelligent comments are more than welcome.

Interesting wording that

Nothing like what it says on mine.

at condition 10 it reads

The holder pf this certificate is permitted to posses, purchase or aquire expanding ammunition and the missiles for such ammunition and to use expanding ammunition in connection with the reasons as indicated below, within the confines of any other condition imposed upon the use of the weapon.

The Lawful shooting of deer.

The Shooting of vermin or in the course of carrying on activities in connection with the management of any estate,

Other wildlife,

The humane killing of animals.

The ammunition may also be used for the purpose of zeroing in connection with the above purposes.

.....................End of conditions...............

Maybe it is this definition:

All deer species are LEGAL quarry, but they are only LAWFUL when in season. :victory:

Not quite true

It can be out of season but you can legally shoot it under licence such as directed by the SNH so your action would be legal

When mine came back about 12 months ago I questioned why had wild boar not been included on the certificate as I hade made a request for it to be included.

The acting FAO said that the wording OTHER WILDLIFE covered all wildlife not just boar so effectively he claimed it left the certification of use on any at my discretion.

To be honest as you say its all a minefield theoretically according to the wording on mine a could go hunting shrews or field mice with my 270. seems a bit hit an miss this open boar authority depending which areas you are with in my view.

Under the license it would be lawful to shoot the deer, but take away that License and it would be UNLAWFUL to shoot a LEGAL quarry.

So would it be legal for me to shoot a Red Stag with my 223,as it state's any legal quarry,?

Then you're falling foul of the other law with regards calibres.....same as you cannot shoot deer out of season even thought they are still on the quarry list.

No because it dosent meet the reqd velocity and muzzle energy reqd by the deer act. and also min bullet weight.

Firearms and ammunition

The stalker must only use a rifle and ammunition which are legal for the species of deer being shot. In addition to compliance with the law the stalker should be guided by knowledge, experience and personal preference in their choice of a rifle and ammunition. The legal requirements are laid down in the several Deer Acts and Orders. For example:

England and Wales

For Muntjac and Chinese Water deer only- a rifle with a minimum calibre of not less than .220 inches and muzzle energy of not less than 1000 foot pounds and a bullet weight of not less than 50 grains may be used.

For all deer of any species - a minimum calibre of .240 and minimum muzzle energy of 1,700 foot pounds is the legal requirement.

Northern Ireland

For Muntjac and Chinese Water deer only- a rifle with a minimum calibre of not less than .220 inches and muzzle energy of not less than 1000 foot pounds and a bullet weight of not less than 50 grains may be used.

For all deer of any species - a minimum calibre of .236 inches, a minimum bullet weight of 100 grains and minimum muzzle energy of 1,700 foot pounds is the legal requirement.

Scotland

For roe deer, where the bullet must weigh at least 50 grains AND have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second AND a minimum muzzle energy of 1,000 foot pounds may be used.

For all deer of any species - the bullet must weigh at least 100 grains AND have a minimum muzzle velocity of 2,450 feet per second AND a minimum muzzle energy of 1,750 foot pounds.

It must be stressed that all these figures are the minimum legal requirement.

For all deer stalking the bullet must be of a type designed to expand/deform on impact.
