Advantages Of The Plummer Terrier

Recommended Posts

I haven't worked a big number of terriers, in fact I've always jrt's. I confess I'm no expert on terriers and certainly don't use them to their full potential, but I do require my terriers to be good at working and finding game, mainly rabbits in cover. It is obviously a bonus for my terriers not to go ground.

Always fancied the looks of a plummer, but don't know a great deal about them other than they are supposed be mainly intended for rabbit and rat foremost. So just wondering being used to jrt's what are the advantages and disadvantages of the plummer terrier over other terriers. Any comments off people who have worked them or seen them work would be great.

Im not an expert either but I do own a plummer and have worked a jrt for a short period and seen another work and the main 2 differences I noticed was that the plummer was quicker through cover and the yap of the plummer when its behind game which is useful to us as we bush to lurchers. But there will always be a jrt that is just as good as a plummer, same as there will be a patterdale just as good. I cant say if it would be the same throughout the breed as this is just my opinion, hope this helps, T10

Cheers t10, didn't the jrt give tongue when they were close behind the game, all mine are very vocal. I've heard a few mention that out of the working terriers that plummets are best if you don't want it going to ground all the time, which is a bonus to me.

The jrt's I went with wernt vocal but I can imagine others are. And theres a few who do use plummers below ground but I just think its how theyve been brought on, but then I used to bush with a lad with 2 patts and 1 was just as quick as my plummer and also vocal. Another thing with mine is that it quite often catches them in the bush which is abit sh*t for the lurchers, I wouldnt change mine for the world though, brilliant dogs! T10

I got both russells and a plummer, when i go digging a russell is first in the motor,if it's for a mooch, ferreting, ratting then it's the plummer first in.I have and do have a dig with my plummer but that's what my russell's are bred to do so it's horses for courses but when hot on a rabbit or other game in cover it's one of my russell's that vocal and not my plummer. The plummers i have found just that bit more biddable than the russell's and i can and have taken them all in chicken sheds, duck farms,in around all livestock catching rats and it's only the plummers i have had are the one's i trusted 100% in not getting carried away,All my terriers get a hard time if they enter rabbit holes and are all easly called away from them but they sure won't come away when old charlie is at home and rightly so :D .

Plummers have fantastic nose's on them, better than any other terrier imo, and dont believe all that bull about them not going to ground, they do, if you want a dog that wont go to ground to bush/ferret with then maybe consider a Spanial or Beagle cross terrier, plenty of lads use them for that very reason, atb, buster.

Dose a plummber have a better nose than a jagd terrier ?

i wouldnt think that theres anybody that knows that as plummers are mainly kept in england and jagds mainly in continental europe and the united states. Some plummers have away better nose than others.

Thank you all for your views and pics (WM). They're a cracking looking terrier there's no doubting that, although I'm not too keen on the larger size ones. I may get one in a couple of years time so there's plenty of time to hopefully find good stock, and it would be a bitch which are probably harder to get hold of. I have contemplated terrier x spaniels etc, but need to look further into it. Also contemplated pure cockers and springers, seem great dogs just a bit full on...if that makes sense

Wuyang,I would 'nt keep any sort of large terrier no matter what the breed,my biggest bitch is only 13"TTS and I bred a plummer bitch that I'm trying to buy back thats like a throwback to 1980 stuff, she's only 9"TTS full size, proportionate and got bottle, sounds like a spaniel/terrier cross would be the dog for you,WM
