Over The Limit Brand New Guns..?

Recommended Posts

need help seetling an argument.. :hmm:

has anybody ever bought a brand new air rifle performing over the limit straight from the gunshop??

for example my hw97 was doing 11.7 .. out of every 100 hw97's how many do you think are produced over the limit..?

im sure you willl get some doing 9-10 ft lbs,?? like my old brand new bsa lightning.. and im sure you will get the odd few that are just over, 12.2 12.3 13 14 ft lbs??

the busy gunshops arent going to chrono every air rifle that comes in their doors from brand new, hull cartridge for example, are they??

and its the shooters/ rifle owners responsibility to ensure their rifle stays under the limit, correct?

in theory you could buy an over the limit brand new "sub 12 ft lbs" air rifle, walk out of the gunshop, get stopped by police and then they check it and its over... you would get done yes?? and the shop might get done aswell for selling a firearm to somebody without a licence..?

so has anybody here ever bought brand new and it be over the limit?? help me settle this! :icon_eek:

lol cheers, SKoT :victory:

I know of a few people who have done that.

I pulled the bolt back on an S300 that was purchased not long before. Thought "eyup, that feels seriously stiff" When it was chronoed it was 23 ft/lbs.

And yep, the buck stops with the person "In Possession" of the gun.

A mate bought a 2nd hand HW80 from a large Glasgow based tackle shop that was puttin out 15FPE when i chrono'd it. I know it wasn't new but it just proves that they're not all chrono'd before leavin the RFD

true, if somebody sold a gun at 15 for example to a gunshop and they just stuck it straight on their rack for sale without testing it....

if they felt lasy for example if they fired a few shots and it was shooting straight and they couldnt be bothered servicing it and checking the power then the guy who bought it could be up sh1t creek without a paddle!!

hi

if you purchase a new rifle, ask the gun shop to give you a Chronograph shot string reading,to show that its under the limit,if they decline don't buy from there

at least you will have proof of ft/lbs if you are pulled, this is usually enough? in my area. but any responsible air gunner will have a chrono to test the air rifle them self's

It's a mine field lads, I'm sure most of us will also be well aware that different types or makes of chrono also show different readings, based on many variables such as lighting and such. Where does the buck stop? So many variables!

That's why my rifle will eventually hopefully be around the 10ft/lb mark so no matter what pellet or chrono is used it will be ok. I have heard of some people purchasing brand new guns and them being well over the limit. Frightening!

There was one well know importer of HW rifles back in the late 80s and early 90s who happily sold export spec guns in the UK.

When you read in the mags that a gun makes 11.9 or 11.7ft-lbs just take a moment to think about that and if you've got something like chairgun on your computer then just see how consistant that gun needs to be to stay safe.

Happens only too often.

Even with only 12 fps spread i think my .177 97kt was doing between 10.8 lowest and 11.1 with jsb exacts.

I personally am happy with that as it leaves more room for variables.

Its just my mate will not admit , ever, that he could be wrong.. he has to be right about everything.! Lol

sounds like my dad !! ;)

Hi my brand new 97kt was 12.10 after about 30 shots trouble is with springers they tend to rise when bedded in so it could be 11.4 in the shop but 1000 pellets later be on or over 12 foot pounds. My first 97K rose 0.7 ft lbs. :icon_eek:
