BlackDonald 0
Hello ladies & gentlemen, I'm sorry for being so naive and posting what probably seems a very mundane question but I couldn't find any similar posts relating to others in my predicament. Out of the blue I was recently approached by a landowner who I do some work for. He is having a problem with deer encroaching on land which he has set aside for grazing. He also owns a number of surrounding woodlands (mostly mature oak) where the deer like to take shelter during the day. There are a lot of Roe deer in the woods but Red deer also. Anyway, he asked if I do any shooting. Unfortunately I don't, however I would like to. I occasionally assist a keeper I know but have never shot anything myself. Usually I just go out with him for a change of scene when he can do with a hand. So my question is this.... what would be the best way to go about making the most of this opportunity? The way I see it I could: Get some shooting experience ( I know a few guys who might help me out ). Study for and gain DSC1. Get written permission to shoot the land and apply for F.A.C so I can make the most of it whilst helping the landowner out (would bring along an experienced stalker to shadow me for a while). Or: Point the landowner to someone else I know and probably miss out on a great opportunity myself. Assuming I wanted to take the opportunity myself am I on the right lines with how I would go about it? It's something I've never discussed as I have felt it a bit cheeky to mention it in the company of guys I know who already stalk and who I assume would not be too eager to have more people grabbing up permissions in the area. I would really appreciate some advice from those of you who have been through the process of getting experience, getting a permission and finding your way into deer stalking. Thanks in advance. Donald. Quote Link to post

Donald. thats the way i would go about it bud, the less people who no hes having a deer problem the better and the quicker you can get on and help him out the better. You would have good reason there for FAC and if you no an experienced stalker who would mentor you then you should be laughing mate ATB ant Quote Link to post

sussex 5,777
Hi Donald ...I would get the permission. Apply for FAC ...remembering ,firearm optics, security, knives etc £££ Find a mentor, Do a course e.g DSC1 this wont make you a stalker but it will give you a start....more £££ Study your ground to know what you have on there, what you can take off that will benefit the deer , the farmer, and you . Know what to do with what you take, Happy eating ,good luck Quote Link to post

dax17 6
Hi Donald Apply for your fac ( yes it's grief ) but once you get out there and shoot something the bug will get you same as it got everyone on here Donald Depending on where you are myself and a friend may be willing to drive up occasionally and get out on the ground with you to show you some of the ropes give you some tips and ideas We don't want to steal your land as we have plenty of our own locally but it's always good to meet someone like minded and get out on some different ground from time to time Anyway depending on how far away you are the offers there bud Cheers 1 Quote Link to post
