Out With The .177

Recommended Posts

Managed to get out yesterday to my main permission thanks to the let up of the strong winds.I decided to take the .177 out rather than my usual .22,reason being i have been doing a lot of paper and target shooting with the .177 and amazed how accurate it is ,hitting small bottle tops at 50 mtr,s no problem. When i got to the permission i was surprised to see how little cover there was, this made the stalking of rabbits more difficult. After a quick zero check all was fine, and then i tried to dispatch some vermin with it and thats when the problems started.I was missing things i am very confident at taking with the .22,i know the rifle is spot on, their was very little wind, the problem lies entirely with me.I would welcome any advice, things to try you lads may have to help me conquer this calibre.Anyway the day was,nt a complete blank managed to bag a few bunnies and some of the feathered variety, but i did miss more than i shot.My confidence with the .177 did take a beating ,but it will not beat me,look forward to trying out some of your suggestions.ATVB Ste.

Good shooting and great vid ste, Only real thing to remember about .177 is you have to be more critical about where you place your shots, and the wind efects them slightly more than a .22. But your doing pretty good the way you are, So keep it up mate and i think you may prefer the quicker, flatter, .177 ! And remember, the aim points on your scope will be a lot tighter, easy to forget that when your used to the bigger curve of the .22, keep reminding yourself before you take the shot, second nature after a while. Good luck and more vids !

I had a good with my dads r10 in .177 and getting one hole groups with bis mags, but still feel more confidant with my hw80k out to 40m purely because its a .22 any further and don't have the skill. I lost all faith in .177 with my bsa ultra when shooting squirrels the tough lil feckers. Plus another thing is knowing the poi when shooting init the wind with .177

Atb and just my opinion

Hi mate,

I`ve just treated myself to a new HW 100 KT in 177 cal and spent nearly four full evenings in an indoor range with it, it ended up where i could manage groups inside a 5p piece "easily" and then a drawing pin like Si and Davy do (am i blowing my trumpet here ? :icon_redface:) zeroed to 35 yds on the button.

I`m so, so used to the 22 cal and springers( 40 yrs) that the pcp in 177 was a complete new ball game and the accuracy and trajectory amazed me, and this gun literally turned me around.

Hunting with the 177 is an eye opener and i found that shot placement is everything as 177 is as devastating as 22 "with head shots" but keep to that rule (head/neck shots) you will achieve them easily with practice and calm days.

I then went on to shooting corvids heart/lung shots and treated this area of the crows as if i were shooting at the head - the 177 was totally effective and they dropped like lead balloons.

Wood pigeon i`ve stuck to the head, neck area.

The lads at the range have taught me to be "aware of my heartbeat" and you will see the crosshairs move slightly on a beat - i now "try" to squeeze off between the beats of my heart.

My humble conclusion on myself is i`m set dead on at 35 yds, dont hold over or under just place those cross hairs, squeeze off the shot between beats whilst exhaling very gently.

Last night i managed two woodies, one collard, two bandits (magpies),one jackdaw.

ATB,

Mark.
