In my area deer are in plage proportions and you can bump into them anywhere. Im not one for keeping my dogs in kennels all summer or keeping them on leads all the time. Saying that going out and purposely hunting this time of year is wrong and shouldn't be done by any true dogman/shooter. Ate walking dogs and accidents happen all part of keeping dogs but i don`t deliberatly hunt anything in the spring and summer with the dogs, or a gun unless its exceptional circumstances. a gun is a different story, you generally only take it out for one reason to kill. you can make excuses all you like but most summer hunting is done for the kill and bragging rights nothing more, nothing less. paulus 26 Posted April 7, 2013 Author Report Share Posted April 7, 2013 There still good numbers of rabbits too be had and i get more inquiry's about killing rabbits in the spring and summer than the rest of the year .When we where out last week on one rented permission the farmer stopped and asked me to go to another for a look and i know theres a guy running about there all the time and there where signs he had been there but there was also signs of good rabbit numbers Same here mate,have freezers full of rabbits still going to farms once a week shooting 10 20 in a hour or two,Keeps the permission. As for seasons well they have changed from the old days ,You wouldnt be out ferreting till november and be finished by febuary if you "listened to the seasons". I asked a farmer if he wanted hes rabbits controling over xmas ,no theres not many around,Iknew there was but couldnt tell him i knew there was,He rang me easter weekend. there will all be pockets of pests that need sorting but im talking in general Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Then theres the "I've got a pup to bring on" brigade. The permission we have, we never get called out in the summer because of plague proportions, most landowners can't even see most of the pests with crops being up etc. If you do get a call out then go there and take a few, no need to decimate your ground. Hunting all year as never sat well with me, I like my ground to resupply itself and also the dogs need to have a bit of a break too, lots of numpties hunt all year round because thats what some other numptie showed them and of course theres the lads who can only catch shit when the quarry is green, they're the ones then who then profess to have wonder dogs. 3 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Saying that Jai, I don't see anything wrong with going out with the air gun in the summer and targeting the odd nice 3/4 grown rabbit for the table, but that's about the only reason I'd personally bother going out after rabbits for in the summer months for.. Nows the time to let them breed, its time to go fishing, a bit of ratting and finishing this little extension I've been nagged about for the last 4 months lol..4 months 7 years and i still haven`t started :laugh: Haha, I'm not one for finishing things I think every room needs something done to finish it off, I don't notice, the wife does lol It did annoy her a bit that the new ferret court was built and finished first lol... Oh and the ratting was crap this morning, we done 3 small water treatment works and ended up on a chicken farm for 6 rats, I got blisters from pulling the smoker ( cut back chain saw).
