gaz 284
Any of you lads or lassies give your lurchers any special conditioning with their nails, not the obvious clipping to keep them down if their not getting enough road work. The reason im asking is after talking to a old greyhound man the other morning while walking my lurchers,he advises giving their nails a wee file to strengthen them making them less brittle and helping with any probs with cracking and splitting ect.He told me to pop in to his kennels when passing and he will give me a demonstration with one of his own greyhounds. Whats peoples opinions of this and does anybody give their runners a wee manicure from time to time..................i wasn't so sure about the red nail varnish he mentioned mind Quote Link to post
bill88 6
I clip my lurcher's nail's,mainly because most of the walking is done on field's so they tend to stay a bit on the long side.Have heard that some greyhound men file the front of the nail's to help stop them splitting, but must admit i would never admit to manicuring my dog's. AFTER BEEN OUT FOR A GOOD RUN GET A NAIL BRUSH AND SOME DISINFECTANT DILUTED IN WARM WATER. GIVE THEM A SCRUB NOT TOO HARD TO REMOVE ANY MUCK AND CHECK THE WICKS AND IF THEY ARE RED OR INFLAMED TAKE EXTRA CARE BUT THE DISINFECTANT SHOULD SORT IT OUT. THEN FILE DOWNWARDS TO STOP THE NAILS SPLITTING AND YOU SHOULDNT HAVE MANY PROBLEMS. Quote Link to post
MikeTheDog 153
..Some dogs like a full pedicure and some don't! My present bitch comes under the "some don't" category.. I try to catch my Meg' out while she's asleep, but alas she sleeps light I remember three off us holding down a collie/grey' on one occassion, it was er "emotional".. Likewise, trying to muzzle Meg' at the vet's when she needed treatment for her blackthorn injury I have discovered that if I pick up her feet as you would a horse's foot I can get away with clipping one nail. Fortunatley, despite putting maximum effort into what she does on some serious ground, she has never injured her feet.. Quote Link to post
gaz 284
Ive seen your dog on here before mike and ive always liked the look of it,she looks a handy type thats for sure but how long you been running her as the proof of the pudding with good feet is how they stand up season after season as your dogs only as good as the feet they run on. bill88 6
My colliexgrey is 7,and although i've never had her laid up with nail probs (touch wood) her stopper's always take a hammering when running her on soft ground or stubble. Quote Link to post

A very valid point imo gaz!...She will be four in December. Most of the time Meg' is run on sandy ground north of the Downs near me, third picture is a good example. The second pic' was in the same area as the first pic but not quite as bad, that first pic' was in the corner of the field where the plough will push to the edge. Meg' does run "cunning" and so-far has adapted to the various terrain presented to her, so on really rough ground she holds back....so far!.. But, accidents can happen!...Fingers crossed I shall do the utmost to keep her safe! Quote Link to post
